Yesterday I decided to redownload EWoM on Gamespot Impulse. Looked like the game has become much stable than when I first bought the game. It also seems to me that there are many changes since then. My conquer strategy is no longer applicable to the latest update

Anyway, what are your survival strategies on the sandbox mode? I could never expand fast enough to sustain a strong army that can fend of the enemies. From time to time, my town will be attacked with an army that has a giant or troll that has about 400ish attack while my guys had about 20-40 attack points.

How do you pick which technology research to go with and how often do you expand your territory? Do you just send pioneer as far as you can or do you create new cities nearby each other?
