i know we have talked about this in the beta group, but i would like to bring it up again. the idea is that polearms(long spears, halberds etc.) should be a slower weapon with a first strike ability. normally when you attack, its A attacks B and then B counter attacks. i think that a unit with a polearm should get their counter attack before the attacking unit attacks(this would simulate a unit coming onto their threat range). this would be a simple addition that would GREATLY expand the strategy in combat. it would be perfect for countering mounted units like it should anyways.
as of right now i play almost every tactical combat the same way. i use ranged attacks and spells until an enemy gets close for my guys to move and then attack them first. this would go along way to help increase strategy. you would basically use polearm units to block other units so that you could maneuver other units into position or to protect your ranged units. also i would like to implement flanking as well. get a bonus for have 2 units adjacent to one enemy unit.
i love the tactical combat, but i think we could use more regular units that would provide deeper tactics.
