I remember this giving me my best insight into A.I. into video games, and how a game like Starcraft and Master of Magic were different. It seems obvious, but I can see how mistakes can be made and how difficult it can be to weigh the 2 aspects (good vs fun). This is from Soren Johnson in 2010:

Yes! That's it, the Arena. I had just fought that group of 4 baddies in the arena, and I won it and all, but after that is when the big time crashes started. Now I can't even load any save game, so I don't know what happened.
The game was running fine for the most part until last night. It would crash every now and then, but I would just close it and reload the game, and that would generally fix it. So last night it crashed, so I left the game, and when I try to load my game today, it's not loading. It says "Elemental: Fallen Enchantress has stopped working" and only lets me close the program. I tried to load another save file, but now I can't load from ANY save file for that game (and we're talking 30
Same here, bought it back in Aug of 2010, before it came out, and still haven't received an email and it's not in my downloads on the stardock site. I submitted a ticket to the support site, so crossing my fingers it gets fixed.
Wow, that's what I would call a big change. I approve this, more please.
Three things: 1. Will there be LAN? 2. Will there be a simultaneous turns option (ala CIV)? 3. Mod support?
Yeah, I'll second (or third) these things. The first 2 are the most important to me, and if we can get a dev to comment on this it would be really great. LAN support was coming for the first game, but I
Sounds terrific, Brad. One question: have there been any discussions internally about the Beta process, and how to handle feedback? WoM's Beta's forum was filled with threads about things that are still being addressed today, such as AI. At the time, we were told it was all Ok in the developer's build, however the release version still housed a few issues. Has there been any talk about how better to address fee
No, the REAL problem is we don't have a dev responding or even another Journal to show that the dev's even care about all the things we're discussing. Sorry, just had to throw that out there. Please continue.
Let's remember that the game as 5 paths to victory (Armies, Infrastructure, Magic, Diplomacy, Champions), and one fundamental task for developers it to keep them balanced enough. This means that magic cannot be too powerful otherwise nobody will ever focus on armies. I am sure that developers, when coming up with spells, want to keep magic with the right amount of power. As someone wrote, in MoM magic was the only direction to specialize, an
Army Customization, you don't see that in MoM, which is really great. The world, the quests, the monsters, the graphics + general feeling (FE will have more charisma than MoM) (I could even add the Zoom option I really like) <span style="font-size: xx-s
Quoting Wilson, reply 197What about modability? I'm no expert, but I'm not aware of any particular mod tools for MoM. In my eyes, that's a huge advantage for FE. Correct me if I'm wrong! Good point. E:FE should certainly be more moddable than MoM.
Maybe I'm wrong about this, but wasn't there some talk about releasing the source code? Wasn't that was Civ4 did that made it ve
Every aspect of the game, not talking about this big magical complaint, is great and is a true rival to MoM, I played MoM enough and still play it too. MoM has still a couple features that FE won't have but FE has a lot of strenght that you don't see in MoM .
Can you name me 3? One is graphics, obviously (2010/11 game vs. a 1995 game); can you name me 2 more?
Interesting that so many people are negative about this document, I think the direction they've taken is great. I really am looking forward to it. I played MoM as much as anyone, and I think that this is a case where people are remembering it being better than it really was (at least in terms of the spells) ...
I wasn't going to comment on the journal, because I didn't want to add a
I also haven't played the game in a while. I come occasionally to see if things are different, but when I see threads like this one, I feel like they keep missing the mark. Like a lot of other people, I'm just waiting for word on Fallen Enchantress which should prove a bit better. That's my hope anyway. Speaking of which, is there any word on when that expansion is coming? I haven't been on the forums in a while, so I haven't read anything about it. Is it this year
I don't know about potential, but this was at least one of the few features in the game that I actually liked. And they're taking it out? Maybe it didn't accomplish what they wanted, but it gave you something fun to play around with: a super strong champion that could be better than your own sovereign. It seems every article I read makes me look forward to this less and less.
So far, quite a bit more like MOM than WOM was.
I like and approve this statement. More please.
The only problem I see right now is that it is an EA game ! And EA is going to bother us with their stupid politics ! To see I guess !
Can you explain what you mean by that? No offense, but enough people just bad mouth EA for no reason just because everyone else does that it makes me wonder what your actual problem with them is. I have more games by EA than any other publisher and the fact that most of it is activated on th
I was thinking tonight of a more succinct way to describe the philosophy different. I'd say War of Magic was designed to be a lot more abstract. That's why so many people found it bland I think. The details of the soldiers and magic were not considered core to the game design because ultimately it was about which civilization was able to acquire the most powerful weapons and spells rather than any real concern over how well thos
They are random so that players can’t simply choose their favorites every time. It also allows us to make traits unbalanced , rare traits can be pretty cool without making common traits useless.
Ah, finally, the idea works its way in. I've said it many times before (and hopefully you incorporate the notion in many other areas of the game), that balance != fun, not necessarily. MoM was fun and was the most imbalanced thin
Nice concept art, but I can remember the last time I was fooled by good concept art. I'll remain hesitant until I see some good in game screens.
AT RELEASE: END OF 2010: E: War of Magic: B - kind of waiting for the new systems to hash out to really get back into it, but my feelings about the game overall haven't really changed. I still enjoy it and am glad I got the game. Starcraft 2: C+ - newness starting to wear off, not sure if the game just isn't for me or if just having a few sides is making it feel less deep/not many things to try.
I prefer huge maps, the bigger the better, like others. BUT, this is assuming 2 things: memory errors are not present, and that the land is unique and full of things to do. If memory errors are an issue, and if the world is empty, I'd just as soon choose a tiny map to get the game over with fast. In general though, I prefer that epic feel over a smaller "island battle." To put it into shooter terms, I prefer the maps in Battlefield and BF: Bad Company 2 vs Call of Duty (epic vs meh).<
Everyone seems to be harping on the bland world, and it's true, it's bland and boring the way things are now. You have to delve into the Adventuring tree just to unlock hidden resources that might or might not be worth it. I totally agree, and was hoping more for a Master of Magic style, where most tiles offer some bonus, albeit maybe not as significant. Because a lot of people are talking about this, I'll post one idea I had. IDEA: If you're not going
Sometimes maybe, but I just want the game to be fun. I don't think that's asking too much.
Kael, David and Jon have really only just got on board, it will be some time before we see in Elemental much of their work..
Yeah, this I agree with. I also think it'll take time to see their influence on the game (Kael's influence I guess is already bringing us quicker patches..? a good thing) but I hope they realize the situation: the game needs work, and not just bug fixes. I could stand for tons of bugs if the game was fun.<
