Maybe this has already been suggested, but I didn't find anything. One cosmetic issue that's been bugging me is the representation of armies on the strategic map. It currently doesn't 'feel' like an army in how it's represented, it just looks more like a gang of friends roaming the countryside. The visual indication of the power of the army is also lacking.
What I think would be very helpful both in terms of visual feedback as well as atmosphere would be the addition of a standard bearer figure to any army on the strategic map that has 2 or more units in it. This would be a little dude holding a medieval standard, similar to something like what's shown below. The standard would have the symbol of the faction, and be coloured with their faction colour for easy identification. This would be cosmetic only - the little dude isn't an actual unit, and doesn't appear in tactical battles.
An additional enhancement would be to fill the banner with the faction colour according to how strong the army was. A 2-unit army would be mostly grey, with just a thin stripe of the faction colour. A 9-unit army would be completely filled with the faction colour.
It would make the armies look more like armies, and also provide visual feedback as to their strength. If you can have the banners flutter in the breeze, even better.
