Me, I just don't get why basebuilding is falling away. Most features that are watered down or exist as a response to an older feature are only there because the feature was too either too difficult for the majority to grasp or to 'streamline' the experience. Look at Dragon Age 2. Not exactly a bad game in it's own right but compared to DA:O it's lacking a lot in the tactical aspect. I don't need to go through a list of examples... being pc gamers you all know what i'm talking about.
But who the hell ever complained about basebuilding? Who found an integral aspect of the game to difficult? It feels like strategy are all following Dawn of War 2's example (it being the oldest game i can think of without basebuilding... could be wrong) But why? For what reason would the majority of developers jump on a one-man bandwagon?
The tactical aspect is what we want in basebuilding. Two examples of it not being handled in the classical way, the way many of us are fond of, is in Shogun:2 Total War and Elemeental. Elemental has no tactical buildings. You have to simply buy a whole army and plop copies of the army in each city, draining your funds like a proverbial mother******. Shogun 2 get's more leeway - it's historical. You absolutely need to buy an army because this isn't fantasy - who else would defend your castle? However, I noticed a distinct lack of units per upgraded castle in Shogun 2 compared to Empire: Total war. It bottles the mind- you pay for a castle with most of the money in your treasury and you only get a handful of units each upgrade. Now i'm forced to keep regular army in each town.
A couple games you guys might be interested in: The Settler's 7 and Stronghold 3. Out now, the Settler's 7 is a great deal of fun. It doesn't have a strong tactical aspect but the way it handles economy is very interesting. The way this game plays, it introduces high-paced economic showdowns with very competent A.I. The game plays very different from anything I was used to, though, so I'd say look up youtube videos. Stronghold 3, after a quick strategy search on steam, is part of some long running series Ive never heard of. The game is supposed to be out in Q3. Apprently is has a very strong basebuilding aspect centered around keeping towns running and castles defended.
