I was just reading a dev journal that got raided by nay-sayers and it gave me an idea. Is it possible to have the magic system give us a reward for using a specific spell more often? I am talking about how in Oblivion and most ElderScrolls games when you level up, you choose bonuses based on what you used the most. Wouldn't it be cool if the same thing happened in Elemental when you used a specific element exclusively with a hero or Sov? Maybe the level system could let us choose a school for our heroes. Thief, wizard, fighter could be generalized. Then it could get more specific as you continue to level. I know I am giving an idea that is a common form of any rpg, but isn't that what our dear frog is probably looking for to give the magic systemt the pizzaz that Avatarian fighting would entail?
for thought is all,

Well perhaps instead of using it more, making spell research have a 'book specialization' tech.
You research it and get to select a single book to have advanced spells from. It'd give bonuses to lower level spells and unlock new, higher level, spells.
Also perhaps overall spell level research adds a base bonus to spells?
While mechanics like this tend to make a lot of logical sense, I find they don't translate well to gameplay. They push people to game the system. If you ever played Oblivion, one of the best ways to level up was to continually summon a skeleton so you could beat it down, making you stronger and giving you better weapon expertise (and helping your summoning a bit as well). I'd rather not have to include some additional calculus in my conquest plans to account for how many additional troops I'd like to let the enemy build so I can chuck a few more fireballs.
Good point malekith. I think the Inteligence aspect could be the key. Maybe certain wizards could simply choose a school of magic and as they level, they get special spells and bonuses. This would be in addition to the shard amplifications and Inteligence. As one's Int goes up, they can pick a new specialization or turn a previous one into advanced specialization. Each specialization could be something that is also needed to be researched or not, depending on how complex it would make the game.
The point is that it would be cool to have fire wizards that you have to train to be a fire wizard. Your nation should be feared as great fire wizards. Your weapons should be imbued with your supreme fire magics by the endgame so that every sword flames with... well with the rage of your fire wizards! The same should go for each element. We should have jack of all trades and specialists with very unique and noticeably different strategies.
