Master of Magic mod (WIP)

Master of Magic: Brought to Elemental (Work In Progress)

I believe that many of the players who play Elemental also played MoM (Master of Magic) and loved the game. I was surprised to see that there is no one working on such a mod (or at least, it doesn't appear in the mod-list), so I decided to make my own.

The current plans for the mod are:

Remaking the battle system: Due to me disliking (or flat not understanding the way it works, if somebody got explanation of how the math works in Elemental's combat I'll be glad) the damage mechanic, I plan to transfer it to MoM battle system. As part of the remaking, I plan to add a lot more abilities. There will be a reason to check a unit for something besides health, attack and defense.

Adding spells to Elemental: Currently, Elemental's spell book is boring. This also includes adding the resistance stat to units.

MoM factions: Adding the good ol' MoM races, and balancing them out.

Mirror: I will try to find a way to make a working Mirror world, since it just won't feel like MoM without it.

After making these, I will see how I can improve the mod. These are pretty much my basic guidelines currently, and I will update them to include more information this weekend. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

 

Note: If there are professional modders around who just don't have the time to commit to this project but would like to help, please post or PM me, so I will be able to ask for help in case I get stuck implanting a specific mechanic.

x_x  Currently I am working on trying to mod this like MOM. Currently Im trying to change the way the Mana system works in this game to be more like MOM's system. This includes beefing up the mana regen in game, but adding mana drains on all the enchantments. Also adding mana regen stats to all of the shards in the game and possibly making temples as well for town production. Also I have been trying to work on the Nature spell tree in MOM, but got snagged on Wall of Stone.

If you do manage to make it works, I would love to use it and even include it in the mod, if that's all right with you.

A couple of ideas to try to solve a couple of your problems: turn the shard system on (as the main magic power) while the essence is the spell casting power. Meaning, you got infinite mana regan, but each enchantment is like a building that instead of increasing shard gain, it decreases. This will also solve the temples problem since they just give more shards (an existing resource). The problem is connecting essence used to shards consumption, and making enchantments act like buildings. Also, what about the casting skill/research/shard gain system, are you planning to implant that as well?

This would be an awesome mod that I think a lot of people would appreciate.  One thing I would love to see included in it is some kind of wizards tower that would allow your wizard to participate in all battles (not physically just spell wise).  Good luck.

The basic combat mechanic is "rA-rD=damage", where rA is a random number between 0 and the attacking unit's Attack value, and rD is a random number between 0 and the defending unit's Defence value.

But there's more to it than that, and exactly what the "more" is, is evidently some terrible secret the nice little Stardockians have sworn to take to their graves. Or at least, they're the only ones who can give you an exact answer and despite countless urgings to do just that, they haven't yet.

The Dragonlance Team and myself will be able to help you out here. We're already making Elves and Draconians and Dwarves. Honestly, I thinking of kicking out a MoM mod anyway but I'm giving Dragonlance precedence as it's my passion. I am an old MoM player though...ahh, the good ol days.

I've a "Wall of Bone" spell working in my mod, HERE. Feel free to scavenge whatever you need. Oddly, I also included the actual tiles for a "Wall of Stone" spell, but didn't hook it in. The bone wall spell is called Necropolis, and it's defined in Gnilbert_UNHOLY_Spells.xml. If you want to see the stone wall, replace the section where I upgrade the city walls to Gnilbert_Wall_Bone to Gnilbert_Walls_Fire. Yes, Fire. It's best not to ask how it ended up like that. There was major frustration. ;)

A MoM mod would be fantastic! It´s still one of my favourite games of all times, just bring it to HD and i´ll be happy!  :)  I really hope you can bring this to an end and the mod doesn´t die before it´s finished.

Sorry for late post.

I am currently in the army, and things are a bit hectic here so I don't have as much time as I have expected.

The current Design and Workplan needs to be updated to reflect upon the changes made by v1.08 (they made the battle system less RNG) and v1.1 (the magic system).

The current priority order:

1. Ability system, both for teaching new units (First strike, Armor piercing etc.) and enchantment. This might require python or just XML, I haven't started testing exactly what can be done in XML and what is needed to be created in python.

2. Rebalancing the city/population and land usage. Currently city spamming is the way to go, and that's a no go. The aim is to make city spamming and a few major cities both viable play styles, probably based on the races.

3. Making a pass over the combat and spell systems.

4. Adding MoM races. MoM races are planned to come with unique tech trees (atleast for the distinct races).

5. Bundeling it all up (Each point will be made as a different mod, though might relay on each other)

6. Moving forward, Implanting and balancing as needed.

I'll try posting the complete ability list (I uploaded what I made so far, but it's far from done as can be seen) by next week, after that I plan to start trying to implant them. If anyone could send me a XML file of a unit ability, it will be greatly appreciated since I currently don't have Elemental on this computer (As I said, I'm in the army- we are lucky I can actually respond).

I believe some of the work is already done by other people and can be scavanged (such as races, thanks to the dragonlance modders). I'll contact any modder for permission before using their mod.

Zard0z, Help will be appreciated. Currently I work on the basic layout of the mod, as it's the easiest thing to do and change. When I start to actually program it, I'll contact you for help.

Hey I loved MoM, and would be more than willing to do any necessary grunt work.  Both my brother and I are avid fans, and coincidently learning python for work anyway.  Let me know How or what you need and I start crunching for it.  My python skills arn't great yet, but like I said if you need any grunt work done, let me know.  I'll compline and debug, or make lists and stats even.  God how great would a MoM total conversion be!

 

EDIT:  I really just want to see Call the Void in High Def.... ROFL.

Just  to  reiterate Raledon's  offer. 

We are a still-forming team of  half  a  dozen (or  so), folks  from  all over the  globe. Or common `glue'  and goal  is the love  of  Master of  Magic, and the desire to  make  a MOM Elemental  mod  that  is  as  close  to  the  original  masterpiece  as  we  can. Our developmental leaders  have strong  modding  experience, and the  team has  such  diverse  backgrounds  as board gamer  designer, illustrator, to programmer,  musician,  and web  designer. We also  hope  in  have  the  talents  of  an  original  MOM  artist join  our  team.

That is such a great picture!!  Someone on your team actually drew that?  WoW!!  Amazing.  I hve no skills to offer you but my sincerest hopes that you can make this happen.  MoM, still ranks in my top 10 games and even higher in strategy type.  I really hope this comes to completion.
