The point is not the research output per turn rather then the benefit from each tech. Civ tech is by far more interesting then other techs.
I said "on a side note". As in a tip for future reference get higher R&D so you can do more testing deeper in the tech trees. Cause you obviously didn't go that far down any of the tech trees. Military has some interesting stuff deeper down like Legions which are full armies of units. But because the enemy is no real threat there is no need for a good military.
But also as I originally commented this phase of beta is on making sure the engine works. What you seem to be asking for is simply more content without any specifics which is something that is going to be added later in beta. Just as all the weapons and customization options are not yet in for units. Heck we don't have archers, siege units, calvary, or naval units in the game yet devs have said their coming and several place hold techs indicate as much.
The devs have also stated they will be looking more deeply into the questing, magic, and dynasty systems during later beta stages and that is bound to help fill out the lacking tech trees.
Also the devs has stated on several occasion that if the current build is "fun" they have failed. They have intentional stripped out a ton of stuff to hide it from us so that we will focus testing what they want us to test rather the simply "play" the game like a lot of people who get into betas for a early release do. Right now it's basic engine testing and save/load system which is still a bit bugged.
