This has happened twice, now, in two separate games. In both cases, the creature I was attacking was a lone timber wolf.
There's a lot more than that. I suggest you check out all the Paradox titles, such as the Hearts of Iron series, Europa Universalis III, and Crusader Kings II; the KOEI games, especially the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Nobunaga's Ambition series; the many war strategy titles published by Shrapnel Games; and the excellent American Civil War game, Forge of Freedom. And they're all essentially "modern times,"

This is also the part of the beta cycle where all the bugs and balance issues are intensively worked upon. Concept, feature set, UI: these are past.

Killed a timber wolf, and got the popup after moving to its lair that I'd found one item of interest. But there was no popup for the item, and no item appeared in the inventories of either my sovereign or first champion.

Problem was solved, in any case--with thanks to Derek for his timely response. It appears I had to regenerate the My Games/Fallen Enchantress directory completely. Simply removing existing mod content and leaving "Use Mods" unchecked under Options wasn't sufficient.

No difference, this morning, but thanks for the suggestion.
Please try the following: 1. Just found something interesting: I can load without problems my last saved game from .0983. It did use a mod--Heavenfall's--and yes, that's despite "Use Mods" being unchecked, and the required mod files no longer being under C:/My Games/Fallen Enchantress/Mods. However, starting a new game still causes a crash. There's also a slight, brief stutter to the intro music after "New" is clicked. Don't know if that will help,
What language version of windows are you running? Do you have mods enabled? Did you modify any XML at any point?
32-bit WinXP Pro, SP3, standard American English, no mods, no XML changes. Same setup that worked fine pre-.990. I can't say that .990 was the culprit, because as I wrote above, I didn't have a shot at playing it prior to downloading .0991.

Problem is still there. I can't say whether it's related to .990 or .991, as I didn't get around to playing the former, due to a heavy workload. Didn't exist in any of the previous betas I've played, however, and that goes back several months.

The programdata subdirectory indicated in the Reporting thread is for Win7. If anyone can tell me where to look for the appropriate archive on WinXP, I'll be more than happy to upload it. I asked about this once before, and suggested amending the thread accordingly. No response was received. I am reminded of Kraxis' canny observation when the Kingdom forces left him stranded: "What am I, chopped liver?"

I suspect so. Unfortunately, I can only download the full 991 package, so if the problem is in there as well, I'll be no further along. We'll see.

Crashing with the .991 update. The opening menu loads, I click New, loading proceeds for roughly 15 seconds, and then CTD. I'm uninstalling and downloading the full beta now.

Shortly after selecting "New" from the startup menu. The music begins to stutter a bit, and then the game CTDs. First time that's happened, and I've been playing the betas for more than 4 months. Also happens repeatedly. Using 32-bit WinXP.

I saw it a few betas back, as well. Nasty event, even killing off a group of level 9 champions. Went back to my last saved game to get around it. The surprising thing to me was that as long as I tried this out, none of the AI players were destroyed--because the spiders did destroy two of my cities. The kind of event that's largely unsuccessful, I think, because it simply causes players to reload to avoid it.
