I feel that AOW is a pretty good standard to hold Elemental up to. Elemental as a Fantasy Sim? It's nothing of the sort. The majority of the work clearly went into the warfare aspects of it. It breaks down to 99% galciv with wizards fantasy war game, and 1% fetch quest. I'm hesitant to even call it a fantasy kingdom simulator/wizard rancher because of how weak the diplomacy options are, and how little dynasties play a role. You are ex

I believe that should be the role of armies: A hero may win a battle alone but if he conquers a city then he cannot prevent its population to rebel unless he has enough troops with him. REBELLION of freshly conquered cities should

And with all the features it has already, and better balance thanks to the HOMM II mod, it's a great play. I don't think there are any useless units any more - for example, peasants at one extra square movement per turn makes a huge difference and in really big stacks they can do a lot of damage if used carefully. Also standard zombies are sped up one s

Armies need to be mass produced somehow, in fact I am moref or a system like the one in the new Total War Series (Napoleon Total War) where you can not only produce building and armies, but if certain conditions apply to that specific city, you can also produce more than one army simultaneously each turn. With heroes nerfed and kept under control in terms of the magic items they can carry, and mass produced armies that die a lot more easily, things will start picking up some spe
Quoting LightofAbraxas, reply 5To be fair, city building in AoW is just as brain-dead as can be. That's one thing that EWoM does better, at least. Not sure I agree with you there. Its been a while since I've played, but if I recall correctly it has a few options. Most buildings allow you to build new units, some increased general productivity, some generated mana, there are a few mutually exclusive shrines that provide unique bonuse

I am not talking about the first AOW, but the 2003 version of the game: I really wouldn't call that bad graphics, it is 2D, yes, but it's actually pretty sweet. I do agree that EWOM has a better graphics: 3D with a full zooming support... But the way AOWSM works is amazing. That game is just as complex as this one and it is pretty m

elements that make aow superior to elemental: 1 Movement: units MOVE in that game! they don't just go by 2 or three squares. in one turn one has the impressin to accomplish something and there isn't that horrible frustration to keep clicking over and over on that end of turn button. For example a hero with 30 movement points can move by 10 hexes on a road (one road hexe costs 3 points). Boats too can move by 10 hexes, since their speed is 40 and one hex

Nerfing heroes: Heroes escaping from battle should get some penalties IE retire some experience point and reduce a random statistic Aesthetics: Helmets should be more expensive for what they do, and they should come in more varieties. So that we would see more heroes not wearing helmets (which also helps differentiating them) - Making armies more useful: While only heroes should be able to perform quests and find treasures, I would be curious to see what would hap
Heroes of M&M has a real battle system original and unique Lol, maybe if this was still 1995. Honestly I was a huge HoMM fan back in the day. I used to hot seat that game for hours. I own up to HoMM5, but never played it alot. I also never got the last expansion and won't be getting 6. Why because the game has been taken over fanboys who don't think the game should ever change. The combat in HoMM feels fossilized. It's unstrategic to the

Who cares about the music and the graphic when the system is about clicking 200 times on a target (and the animations are still too slow so that half of the time one clicks for nothing). Heroes of M&M has a real battle system original and unique: spells have a meaning there, they are all useful, without them you can't outsmart the AI. In comparison the devs of Elemental seem to have put no though at all on their battle system there is nothing to outsmart here because the fight is

I remember following the development of Age of Wonders Shadow Magic about 10 years ago, and since those guys were and are pretty much as open to suggestions and feedbacks as Stardock, I had a pretty good impression of what was going on. At some point they ended up with the same issues that Elemental is having now: Heroes were too strong. In fact probably most people noticed that in order to win in these latest versions of the game one can just pump up a few heroes and auto fig

Cool, believe me as long as I can mod teleport off and add some speed, I am fine! All I really need to pray for now is just for a Play By Email option. That way I'll manage to finally create some excitement in this game, by making it playable in multiplayer like the last Age of Wonders. See I don't really care if the AI is useless, I just want to play humans anyway. I just hope all that stuff stays at least moddable... everything changes so fast around here! [e digicons]:\[/e

Please this game has to be sped up REALLY bad! I have tried to play without even having the teleport spells (I presume they are tied to the movement book, but anyway I made a no-book sovreign and finally no teleport spell was available. A cool discovery since if things stay that way I could one day try to play in multiplayer with that as a house rule. Obviously the overwhelming slowness of the game started to slowly suffocating me, and the boredom of the pace took over very so

Hi, don't know how to define this as a bug, but it is certainly a way the game is not working as planned. My Sovreign has 20 attack and 20 defense (more or less) he is a fallen emperor. Alone he has conquered about 15 huge fallen cities full of Sions. Each one of them had about 10 sion teams (9 or 12 sions in each unit). Because he has lots of movement points I can attack the same target several times during a turn. Apparently those units are unable to even wound him, probably

I have been around games for 30 years, at one point I was even a tester and I have seen them all. Age of Wonders Shadow Magic in Multiplayer (Play By EMail) is the most fun I have ever had with videogames. Games used to last years, by playing one turn a day. Amazing experience: certain days were dedicated to some special event in the game, others were kind of slow, that really made me live in the game like I have never experienced before or since.

After three games like that, which I had to stop because boredom took over (You guys say to spam units and cities? What the hack can I spam if I have no money?) I finally managed to start a game that is a little more active (lowered the difficulty level and probably just got lucky). The enemy still has lot more units than me, and they are way too powerful, 'lucky' I can teleport around my only decent stack (I hate that) , otherwise I'd be dead every turn. So now I have to teleport, te

Hi guys, sorry if this post is going to sound like a rant, but I am really very frustrated with this game. Hopefully from my observation something positive will come up for the developers. First of all, we know what is good in this game: personalization, the general concept of mixing a wargame a RPG and a city developing game. But the result so far is still very bad. While I feel we have passed the stage where the numebr of bugs was beyond ridiculous, I feel we are now in the

Good exercise. I read a lot on the subject and I am a passionate wargamer. Personally I believe that the real difference between knights and peasants would not be in the way they are armed but in their morale. So truth is that almost none of those fights would take place, and certainly not to the last man because the peasants would run pretty soon. For the sake of giving a hypotetical numeric quantification of the idea, let's say if the peasants are less in number than
The goal of v1.1 is to address the major issues we all -- as a community -- have identified as being basic issues with the game -- the magic system, AI, and economic system being the top 3 IMO. Beta 1 is a big step towards addressing magic and economics in the game (they'll need to be balanced still but it's a much better mechanic).
I am very surprised that movement has not been addressed as a major issue (unless

But here we are talking about something that can only buy favors from the AI during diplomatic exchanges. It serves nothing else! IT IS "EXPLOIT" MONEY, the AI craves it and it does nothing with it. It's distinctly different from charisma in how you acquire it, however - where charisma is something your sovereign personally has and can gain more
