I do so enjoy strategy game forums. Better discussions, and nobody calls me a noob Initiative / combat speed being separate from attacks per turn is intuitive, but joining them isn't catastrophic unless implemented unwisely - I'd like to just speak to the theorycrafter argument well-phrased a page back. Your point about scaling only applies if stats are linearly linked. If +1 damage is always +1 damage per attack, sure, more s
Winner Takes All Morale It might be interesting if morale triggered various benefits based on events on the battlefield. Say a group of soldier has low morale, and their direct enemies become low on health, so the soldiers become reckless (lower defenses, higher combat speed) in order to finish their immediate opponents off. Or your troops have high morale, and are fighting along side their sovereign
Way to break the thread display Raven. :P I do want to comment on one thing specifically you said.
I can tell you this though...this is NOT a Real Beta. If it was each and every One of Us would have the Internal Alpha of the game. This grand experiment of Stardock's to work with the community is nothing more then a over-blown marketing ploy. Just gotta say that the more I think about it, the more disappointed I am at the dropping of continuous turns. That could have been something pretty special. I'm also late to the party, but I read the whole thread and will try to add some points that haven't been said (though some of it will be repetition).
In no particular order these are the things that matter: Combat Speed. Your combat speed determines how many “moves” / attacks you ge
Also, I just thought of another major concern for me. Right from the beginning, Brad said that we'll be able to reenact battles like the Battle of the Five Armies from the Hobbit. To be frank, that is one of the most exciting things about the game for me - that would just be awesome. But... A battle between five different players' armies in turn/tile-based combat? ...That just does not have the same appeal. You'd spend most of the comba
Option 3 is acceptable for me, but I still prefer "truly turn-based" combat, because it's better to see the results of my actions immediately (instead of only giving orders to see the results later, when the game unpauses), and it's easier to watch things happen in a sequence than multiple units acting at the same time.
Aside from being slow, a truly turn based game also has the "you go first" problem.
This is a valid concern but there is one thing I never understood. Why don't games just compensate for this difference? Moving diagonal is roughly 1.414 times as far as move horizontally or vertically. Just make it cost more to move that direction. Are they just afraid that fractions are too complicated or is there some other reason I'm not thinking of that makes this problematic? I can understand that the roo
Agreed, Tridus, and well said. Bioware, who made DA:O, is mostly (or was) the members from the studio "Black Isle" who made Baldur's Gate, which is why they have the same system, which was also used in "Neverwinter Nights". I like your idea except for there's no need for the "10 seconds before auto pausing" part. It would simply wait for you to hit "End Turn" or "Next Turn". The 10 second per turn would be excellent for Multi-Playe
This is a good post. I know some people will have different experiences, but I can't think of one memorable TBS battle... not one. Conversely, I have hoards of memorable battles from the RTS battle system in Total War. Things like watching my one unit of archers try to light a siege tower on fire as my badly outmanned defenders wait anxiously. Or the quick retreating and reforming of my lines in the face of elephant at
You know if someone could actually pull of a Good "TRUE" TB without the uses of tiles and Hexes I would love to see it. Problem is it seems as soon as you remove the tiles everything converts to a RTS. It's like once you remove the tiles not having any kind of scale to work with throws things off for alot of people.
I think people would get used to it pretty quickly, since its already how RTS games work. It's a bit of a change
Tactical battles haven’t been part of the beta but they’ve been heavily discussed. Originally, tactical battles were designed to be RTS. Then Continuous turns. But as time has gone on, it’s become clear that the gameplay that people (and frankly that we enjoyed the most) was more closest to XCom. That is, turn based. Tile based. Moving units to the best spots. And eventually working to have your units in spots that are easy to spot the enemy while

I'm still trying to figure out Elemental as well, based on current information (I have to admit that I haven't paid close attention). Anyhow, Steam-exclusive games are an automatic "no-buy" for me.
There's a lot of info about Elemental, it's just scattered all over the place. Right now with beta 1 we're pretty limited in terms of what we can do, but it plays kind of like Age

But seriously, not being on impulse seems sooo wrong.
It's not on Steam either. Blizzard doesn't sell games through third party digital distribution. Or for that matter through DD at all until after the game is out. You can't even buy it from Blizzard, their order page sends you to stores. Wrath of the Lich King
I'm still trying to figure out what this game actually is. Video diaries suck when they're the main thing on the site.
Well, not really. That process is a more formal one. The Stardock one is to put things out early and get a lot of feedback on it, then go back and make changes. They both result in a lot of feedback getting to the developers, though they do it in different ways. If that feedback gets used or not is another story, but in the end it's the devs call. :)
Yes. Right now the 32 bit version is being used on 64 bit Windows, but it works great. Eventually we should get a 64 bit version that will be able to use more memory and larger maps. Enjoy!

Yeah, Mass Effect 2 DLC has been pretty well universally awful. Glad I didn't buy. It's amazing just how overpriced it is.
Theoretically, you should be able to play on a very old computer using just the cloth map. I don't know how that's going to work in the final version, but it was mentioned as a way to run the game on netbooks. IMO that'd be great, why limit the playerbase if you don't have to?
Quoting Aractain, reply 54 Put simply - no MMO is half as good as WoW. I am not sure about this....they are not half as popular. Popularity |= being the best, but huh...this is a matter of subjective opinion I guess.
In the business world, "best" is pretty easy to figure out. Blizzard makes more money then pretty well every other MMO combined. There's WoW, and then there is everybody else. Nothing is even close
Yeah, that's been a complaint of mine. I believe there's an option in Impulse' preferences to set the location for archives, which will at least tell you where it's going.
