Just one thought... If retaliation costs AP, it will actually be a bad thing to counter-attack. If this mechanic is in place, I'll bring an extra dozen or two sacrificial peasants. 3-gold to wipe out an action point of a powerful opponent? I could take 1 hero and a bunch of peasants to kill anything. I'd keep attacking every turn until they are out of action poin

A lot of the resource improvements seem buildable from both places. I was able to build on a farm from my city build menu and by clicking the tile itself. Could just be not hooked up everywhere yet.

You could get away with one movement stat that applies overland and tactical. AoW did that after all and we're all praising it here. :) It's just that with the type of numbers Elemental is using, the tactical movement speed would need to be some multiple of the overland speed (tactical battles where most units move 1 tile a turn would get REALLY annoying). It does seem that we all agree that combat speed and movement speed need to be split somehow though. You need to be able to boost
Agreed. In terms of tactical combat, I really think AoW:SM had it done well. Had cover, high-ground, movement penaltys by terrain or spell... And takes care OK of the retaliation without abusing... pedroente, how did the AoW:SM system work?
Units had a "moves" stat. Moves used the same number overland and tactical. Numbers ranged from say 12 for a very slow unit (like a zombie) to 40 for flying dragon

While there are times for it to be called for (game start, key battles, etc.) There should be far more reasons for them to hang back at the city and imbue a couple of heroes to cast spells.
That's kind of up for debate, TBH. AoW 2 used that kind of model of a stay
Quoting Tridus, reply 65 edit - One thing I would say is that a unit should be able to attack once. That is if you have AP = 4 and combat speed = 1, you should be able to move 3 and attack once (the attack in this case would cost 4, but just uses whatever you have left). A unit with AP = 4 and combat speed = 2 could also move 3 and attack once, or move 1 and attack twice. Absolutely unrealistic. I don't like this idea. Creature

If nothing else, the faction selection screen needs a label explaining how to make custom factions, or a button to launch the faction editor. Someone who hasn't played a previous beta right now would have no intuitive way of knowing that faction customization exists (or will exist once it's put in).
Here's one idea I had that would give more flexibility. Action points = Move Number of action points it takes to move one tactical tile = 1 Number of action points it takes to attack once/cast a spell once = Action Points/Combat Speed Number of action points it takes to counterattack = Half that to attack That way, combat speed is the number of attacks you
This is very very interesting. I'd like to hear what others think of this. The main thing we are looking for here is that we want a user to be able to have god like heroes (think Sauron at the beginning of LOTR) and the best way to do that is to make sure that unit can go around and kill a lot of units via either Melee or magically in a single tactical turn. We can't do this if we use moves as the number of tiles they ca
For the last part of that, not enough ram, is there something i can remedy the situation with that isn't adding more ram?
If you have other stuff running, close it. That's about it. You do have enough RAM to run the game, but not with a lot of leeway so it's making room. The release version of the game should also be better optimized and will use less RAM.

Not sure if beta access is open right now or not. If it is, you should get another email from Stardock with the keys, and it'll let you in then. You may have to check in again on Monday about it.

If you have two monitors, fire up Task Manager and put it on monitor 2 before you play. On the Processes Tab you can see what Elemental is doing CPU and memory wise. (If you have a logitech G15, a keyboard app called LCD Miscellany is useful for that too.) Take a look at Elementals CPU and memory usage, and see how long it takes after you exit the game for the process to actually close. Just because the game isn't visible doesn't mean it's not still running. From there we can diagnose

Didn't see this thread the first time, but I've been talking about essence lately and saw it linked elsewhere. :) So here's a post that explains what I want Essence to be like. Short version: a limited pool of power that you use to activate certain "fun" special powers that isn't tied to anything else and that you don't hoard except maybe to spend later. Generally speaking, a stat like essence is more fun when the game lets you

Given how much more important the overland map is for Civ 5 combat wise compared to previous versions, it seems that a strategic view is pretty useful to see what is going on. In that case, who cares where they copied it from? The game is better for it.

With the patches to the beta, I've been needing to open up Impulse and look for updates in there. When you open it, it checks for updates. For released games (like Dragon Age), the Impulse system tray icon tells you on its own that an update is out.

They still have enough to cast what they need and support enchantments. Every time a caster sovereign uses essence, he gets weake
