The cloth map is feature that kicks in when you zoom out to a certain level. Stardock has said that your comp power will determine when the regular graphics go away and the cloth map kicks in, and if you have a crap PC you could play the entire game on it. This isn't Ubisoft. Internet will only be required to play multiplayer over Stardock's servers and to update the game. If you want to play single player or LAN you won't need to be connected to the internet. EDIT: You CAN update your game if you don't have the internet on the same PC as you do the game, but can use the internet somewhere else, it's just a little more complicated then just opening Impulse and clicking update. Elemental is a turn-based strategy game. From what I can gather in your post(it's very difficult to read with no line breaks between paragraphs) you're worried about long matches, which is generally an intergral part of TBS games. It takes time to develop an empire from nothing and defeat all others. I can't imagine any size map in Elemental taking less then a few hours to complete.
