The math given to refute this is just wrong. A level 12 hero will deal 36 damage with a Wail. 8 shards will cause Dirge to do 11 damage per round, nearly catching up in 4 rounds (accounting for casting times), considering that you don't have to sit on your ass after casting Dirge.
My math above included Path of the Mage and Evoker II on the L12 Sov. Also your 8 shards (plus path and Evoker II bonuses) will

Enemy heroes will cast 'Gift of Iron' even though another hero in their army has already cast it. Since the spell does not stack, repeated castings are a waste of time and resources on their part.

Extra note - download and look carefully at the spellbook, you can find it as a stickied post at the top of this forum. Towards the back there are two pages of dual-school spells, where you need to be Rank II in both schools before the spell unlocks. These are often very powerful, and can shape the design of your sovereign dramatically if you want access to one or more of them.

Hmm OK. Step 1 is to pick a Faction that you enjoy playing, with or without a custom Sovereign. Step 2 is to start the game and look for a good starting city site, I hope for a 4-3-2 next to water or forest or both. You can press Control-N repeatedly until something like this shows up, or you can ironman it and hunt around for something else adequate nearby. You want to be next to a forest for more production (Logging Camp etc) or water for more longterm

Counterspell is the key IMO. He'll have like a 20%+ chance to resist it though, so as someone above suggested bring two mages who can both cast Counterspell or its equivalent (Spell Leech etc).

It is possible to shrink a dragon, but they are pretty resistant and you can only shrink them once. They are still pretty damn strong even when shrunk. Blind is pretty effective, so is Curse, but once again you have to get the spell to stick, and your troops are probably pretty crappy so even semi crippled it will still be tough to kill a dragon.

If a Kraxian Archer uses Fortify to gain the bonus accuracy and dodge, they should NEVER (well almost never) leave the square. I was watching an autoplay, and a fortified archer had a group of mites approach him. The archer does what it normally does, retreat one square (completely pointless) and shoot. This moved the archer out of his fortified square, making them much more vulnerable to the mites. In addition the ^&%* mites moved into the fortified square!<

Mirror demons reflect damage, a really cool ability which I had never experienced until today. However I found a possible bug when fighting an enemy with the Maul ability. Scenario is this: Mirror Demon v Bear Cub, the Cub is very wounded and about to die. 1. Bear Cub attacks the demon, hits and inflicts X damage. 2. Mirror Demon reflects X damage back, which is enough to kill the bear. 3. The bear doesn't die! Inst

Saying be patient doesn't work, because the numbers never do catch up unless you have an extremely long battle. In a 5-round battle Wail wins in terms of damage every single time once you're past the extreme early game. If you go longer than that Dirge can start to catch up, but how many battles do you have that last that long? Here's some #'s that I cut out of my original post to prevent people going TLDR. I have a ton of #'s below, but in

Anyone use the Noble profession? I am trying to figure out how to justify it to myself. Noble: +1 Prestige, 5% less unrest across your nation Now +1 prestige has a pretty obvious benefit, but in the early game my cities tend to not have enough food to keep growing and so prestige gets wasted. In the late game you have a lot of cities and prestige gets spread more thinly. Since all of the early civ techs (and a bunch of others) have +1 prestige I am not

[Edit] The current suggestion on the table, endorsed by Derek, is to remove the casting time from Dirge of Ceresa. Having it kick in immediately would go a long way to making it more damaging and more fun. Right now Dirge of Ceresa kinda sucks. There are two very close analogies to Dirge (Horrific Wail and Contagion), and quite frankly Dirge comes in last of the three. It does do (one point) more damage than Contagion, but less than Wail. However

I didn't look for the potion until I had the scroll scribe, and I was in the process of making an Apothecary about that time. Thatnks for setting me straight Heavenfall =)

Or you can play Ironman, no saves no reloads. It can be very painful sometimes, but it does get around the bug issue while making you think a lot harder about whether you can afford to fight right now or not. If the system actually crashes, then you still have the autosaves,
I play dense monster games on an epic pace. Backswing is incredibly useful. I can't speak for Axes once you get further into the tech tree, as I haven't played a game to completion yet, but they at least have a use early game. I haven't taken an axe to any units sporting heavy armor yet, so it could be totally useless at that point, I wouldn't know.
I agree with this one. If you are 'Lucky&

I usually try to get Coop as soon as I viably can. Before then I build troops, yes, but more of the throwaway variety. Once I get coop I then start to incorporate more crystal accessories and weapons.

I was combing through the XML to see what bonuses cities could choose at the higher levels, and I ran across what looks like a typo. The internal name refers to small furry animals, instead of a grand institution of coins and precious metals. All of the other text appears to be spelled 'Mint', but the internal unlock is 'Mink'.

When you level a Conclave city you gain the ability to build an Apothecary, this grants access to a potion (90g?) which can cure one random injury per dose. Quite useful!
