Ah, no; I was not aware of that, as a matter of fact. I knew there was a closed beta, of course -- indeed, it feels like I've been constantly bombarded with contests in which you can win a beta key -- but I didn't know there was going to be an open beta as well. Thanks for the info, Nesrie ; much appreciated! Now I just have to decide whether or not to upgrade my video card now, or if I still want to wait.... <

Any news on when it is expected to be released?
Only that it should be released towards the end of 2010, and even that's not been officially confirmed. At the moment, both Code Force and Matrix Games are being very tight-lipped about the game (including the release date); again, there's supposed to a lot more info made available to the public at the end of the month here.
Is there any TW game that was any good in terms of AI etc.?
Both Shogun and Medieval actually have very decent combat AI, and the campaign/strategic AI in Shogun isn't bad either. Not great, but not horrible. The campaign AI in Medieval is mediocre, although still probably better than in either Rome or Medieval 2. The AI in Empire is downright schizophrenic, on both the tactical & strategic le
Note : There are numerous games released in the last year or two that I'm interested in getting -- I continue to eye Sins of a Solar Empire , for instance -- but I have not included them on this list. I've also excluded any upcoming games if I'm not sure they're coming out this year. Must-have games : Elemental: War of Magic D
Armada 2526
Well it certainly looks pretty enough. Only time will tell if there's anything more to the game than visuals, plus it looks like more of a standard RTS than a true empire-builder, but it could still be fun if done right. Keep your fingers crossed, I guess....
Quoting Frogboy, reply 12 will the AI continue to be "smartened" after the official release of the game? Heh. Brad is well-known -- if not downright famous -- among GalCiv2 players for improving the AI in every patch/update
How on earth did Heroes of Might & Magic IV get on that list?? By almost all accounts, it's a piece of crap, and the worst installment in the entire HOMM series.
I'm not sure if this belongs more here or in the general Elemental forums... One of the things I've long wanted to see in grand strategy games -- those that have playable battles, anyway -- is for an empire's campaign-level (or "strategic") AI be able to communicate with/to the combat ("tactical") AI the importance of a particular battle. In other words, you'd expect an empire to fight that much harder to protect its capital (or other major city) th
I’m going to write more on this later when I’m not so annoyed but I’m REALLY getting tired hearing from game developers who blame piracy for their game’s poor sales. If you make a game for the console demographic, don’t expect to make huge PC sales, okay? Oh, and if you make your game require hardware that only a couple million users have, guess what? You’re not going to sell a lot of units. More later.

Bearing in mind that I've only been able to play Armada 2526 rather sporadically the last few days since I got it, I'm already comfortable giving at least a tentative recommendation for it. Further playing til dawn playtesting will tell, but thus far I'm honestly quite pleased with my experience. The game is fairly easy to learn (thanks in no small part
I'll second both Shogun Total War and Galactic Civilizations 2 (plus expansions). In addition, Medieval Total War (the real first one, not the "sequel") should be a nominee as well. After all, at the time of its
Baron Zinq , If you're looking at getting a new space strategy title, you could do a lot worse than to pick up Armada 2526 . I've only been playing it a few days so far, but I'm already really enjoying it. The battles are a bit weak IMO, but the excellent AI and diplomacy works really well and more than makes up for it. Also, you can have some truly massive maps for epic games if that's
