Hopefully magic weapons are limited enough to where they aren't spammed, and given only to elite units.

I'd say Camp #3 should be what the first attempt is, then go from there.
Ultimately, the more I look at this (also through IRC)- the reason idea #2 is getting traction is mostly due to a lack of faith that idea #1 can work with the AI, or a belief that idea #1 will end up too micromanagement heavy. One idea I just came up with: You should be able to design certain elements of your unit's appearance outside of the game itself. The idea I came up with was combine character creation from Soul Calibur IV with Spore's
I had a long post thought out, but I have played a game where idea #1 was used. Paradox made a game called Victoria that seemed to be exactly what idea #1 was. It ruined the game for many people. Now, in some aspects Elemental would have an easier time of it then Victoria- in that you have less time pressure in Victoria. However, I'm concerned the system may be too complicated for most players. You gotta remember this forum is the diehard core
I hate to say this, but several of the above posters are right- Elemental can't do everything. Our computers can't handle it. My real concern is how the AI handles it- cause ultimately, most of us will be playing this single player vs the AI, and if the AI is gimped due to this, the game won't be much fun no matter how good the mechanics are. You guys do a bang-up job with AI in general, but even you guys can't do everything here (your resources are limited)
I think you're looking at this entirely wrong: Real question: can the AI handle system 1 as well, or almost as well, as a human can? I'd like to know this before giving an answer. That said, the problem with idea #2 is that how are you going to get the resources to make high-end units? How many cities would have horses+metal? How about an idea #3? Going to propose something new. Resources give you a vector of
It's possible that Elemental killed the sales of this game some. I tried the demo and wasn't impresssed enough to buy it, especially wiith Elemental coming out so soon. Also, I tend to a bit wary of Paradox's 3rd party games, which tend to be extremely buggy. (Their 1st party games have gotten a lot better in terms of tightness at launch- despite being some of the most complex games ever)
Revolts should be a possibility. A razed city would produce independent militia (not very strong, but would try to raid and avoid direct conflict) Slim chance of a hero popping up from the razing, which would be a pain in the arse. A looted or migrated city would produce some revolters as well.
As long as consumers reject the idea, it won't take off. Companies can try whatever DRM scheme they want, but people have to buy the product for it to work. The point will come where DRM will cause a title to be a massive failure. Spore definitely lost profits over the flap. While piracy rates won't drop, this generation of consumers knows about DRM more, and will reject it more and more. I think the ultimate endgame is going to be reduced development c
Holy 25 posts. That said, routing makes sense to me. Also will make army elimination/preservation a bigger part of the game, as it should be.
My stance: It's only wrong in that you're denying the company profits. That's the loss from copyright infringement. If a company is no longer or doesn't actively seek the profits, then it's ok. Basically this leaves these categories ok to me: Imports with no US release, or no US release for an unreasonably long time. To me, exclusivity windows for regions make a title fair game, unless it's a few days or a week or so. But if
You could make a variation in the spells and their effects depending on the element Healing spell for fire- burning metabolism. Heals the unit completely in 1 turn, but makes unable to heal naturally for 5 turns Parch- makes unit thristy , slowing it down, lowering its morale, and raising it's maintenance cost. Stuff like that.
Things I hate about Steam: It screws up mods It required to be on to play games, and doesn't turn off when you stop playing them. It's not one-click shutoff Give me a choice, I'll take Impulse, then Gamersgate, then Steam. (except for Paradox developed game, where I'll go Gamersgate to support the devs 100% if I get one of those)
Impulse has been a good influence on Steam. One example: Steam is now doing the DRM listings that Impulse does, you can see it on their store under 3rd party DRM.
I do like the everyone loses condition- that could give players who are on the wrong end of the slippery slope something to shoot for.
I gotta admit, I prefer original fantasy worlds, though I don't mind elves frolicing around. Then again I've never really cared for Tolkien. (I know, heretic- burn me at the stake) That was one of the pluses about Kohan- sure some of the minor races were similar to elves/dwarves, but it was an original setting. For Elemental, the factions and modular unit creation may have a role in things as well- that's where some variety could come in. As fo
My issue is more the fact they were profiting from things that were not theirs. I can see copyright infringement in some situations- such as product not being offered in your country, or being butchered in your country. You can't steal profits that aren't being sought. To me, it's not the product being stolen, it's the potential profit from the game. If you're not selling, I don't think companies have a particular right to complain. (This isn't a
Can't say I feel too much sympathy- they made millions off of piracy.
That said, the way Kohan did it was with random techs. Some games you got bonuses to your units, like your spearmen were a little better, or you got a new mage. Those things could really reshape your strategy. For Elemental Random games, random tech lines and other random heroes/events/whatever that don't show up in every game could help with the replay value- though there should be an option to have all of them.
Simply put, it's impossible- all SP games start to dull when you play them enough. MP will help Elemental out a lot, esp if combined with modding tools and mini-expansions.
What I'd like to see is that in your turn you do movement orders, then click end turns, moves are done simultaneously and gradually. Mechanics may be difficult though.

Should be posted on the website, I think it's $5 total, very reasonable.
Hoping to get in the beta 0, but don't expect to. Generally, from my experience with DA and TA, Brad's really underestimating the amount of fun the early betas, the addition of new content from time to time really does help the fun factor over receiving it all at once. That said: You gotta love SD's betas- most places, a six-month delay would be moaning and gnashing of teeth, whereas the ones who would be can at least preorder and play what's read
Elven Legacy is the sequel, you'd probably be better off either getting FW to see if you like the series, or getting EL next week.
