Not modern games anyway, maybe ancient DOS stuff.
Did you just insult the good old games of yesteryear, like Might and Magic, XCOM, and... hrm, actually those are the two series I care about! :P

I can't seem to get GC2:TA running (and it's the only GC I wanna play at this point :P ) I figure it's not SD's fault I'm beta testing a new OS, and I'm going back to playing Xcom for a while...
Now, for those of you have been gamers for ten years or more, the name 'XCOM' may bring up fond memories of mashing at your keyboard, screaming in frustration because the aliens just threw a grenade right into your gigantic clump of troops on the first turn. If you're an utter newb, anyway... ./whistle Anyways... for those of you who know of XCOM (or would like to learn), Steam has the complete series up for a mere 15$ total. I haven't
My biggest Nexus complaint is that three times I've downloaded the demo. Three times I've been completely incapable of figuring out how to do anything. The demo is useless because it doesn't come with a tutorial, and that game needed it!
Quite possibly...but the issue is that the OS is still in Beta...so compatibility can/may be broken between now and when 7 goes Gold.
Yeah, but at least this way you'll have a leg up on fixing whatever goes wrong :D
I like the story. Here's the one thing that bugged me about it, though- a lack of descriptions. The story as a whole is very plot/action-driven, which is good, but there are things missing that would really give it more body. Things like: Describing the environment around where these events take place in further depth- colors, scents, architecture, climate, etc. More of the internalized thoughts of Kona,
The argument that competition keeps people on their toes works in a lot of scenarios. I think Valve is different though. They pioneered the digital distribution scheme and are constantly working on updating their games and services. As a company they patch and add content all the time, in the case of many games, years after they've been released and aren't bringing in any recognizable revenues.
Check your facts! Stardock got SDC out before Valve
In terms of the beta, all users who pre-order have access to the beta program. But we are looking to have a private Beta 0 or pre-beta or late alpha or something available before the beta program begins that will largely go to users with high karma / have GalCiv II / Sins / Demigod so that we can make sure the first beta works. There's a lot of new tech going into this that we will need some outside testing with.
But...
One of my early favorite characters was a somewhat silly paladin named Winthrop. Shortly after hitting 7th level and unreasonably lucking into a holy sword, he got to excessively feeling his paladin oats during one very bad day in some hills occupied by a Greater Cyclops. Being that sort of fellow, he actually fell back to the rear of the fleeing party, told them to run hard while he did what he could to distract the horrid thing. I was fully prepared to kiss the character goodbye--it
When your shaman died, you'd respawn (not immediately) at your holy ground/"shrine". I think it was something like 30-60 seconds before you actually respawned, so you couldn't do anything with your avatar during that time, but you could still order units around, etc. Additionally, during the time where you're "dead", your opponents (actually I think it's just the one who kills you) gets a mana regeneration bonus for the duration. I really liked this, but I also have to admit to abus
Um, Sauron isn't a wizard.
but directly telling what units should be upgraded should probably be a job for the player..
Defining which units, yes, but hunting them down to do it, no... I think we may be talking at cross purposes or something here...
I'm not going to bandy swords with you on this topic -- the point I was trying to make was something else anyway.
You know, Good generals study strategy, Great ones study logistics
Study, yes. Doing the Quartermaster's job for them, no.
Well, since quibbling is clearly fair game in this thread, I'd say that you're confusing power with influence. Power is the ability to get people to do that which they otherwise would not. Influence is the ability to get people to adopt your point of view voluntarily.
Actually, I just choose not to make a distinction since they both come out to the same thing in the end :P Actually, its a lingual issue -- the English language really doesn't have all the wo
@Ron Lugge: Point, but if we go by that train of thought.. shouldn't most of the game be automated then
No... Grand strategy is my job; in 'small' maps I might even handle the equipment of soldiers, but when the number of soldiers grows to the point that the individual is no longer important, that is what I have advisors / assistants / secretaries for. That's always puzzled me.
Don't forget, Mordor looks horrible, but plants do grow there. Just not the kind you or I would prefer to deal with. Damn, I can only give you one Karma point at a time -- instead of one for each set of cool-looking avatars!
Well, when you are dealing with the re-equipment of such an army anyways, it's more a question of logistics, because either you'll have to move the army to your main military center for them to be equipped immediately, which would leave your outer territories somewhat exposed, or you would have to deal with a logistics nightmare of epic proportions no matter what, just to ensure that weapons, armor and such was sent out to all the different armies throughout your realm.
While yo
p.s. If you haven't tried Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, it might be just the tide-me-over you need to make it all the way to full release day for Elemental. Even missing the last volume or two, the series is several thousand pages long. If it doesn't turn you off pretty quickly, you'll probably be sucked in seriously and eventually need to go into Wheel of Crack recovery. I've seen it happen several times.
Don't forget, he didn't have time to writ

As the alternative seems to be some rather awkward and complex system that in the end might require more work than just doing it by yourself...
Depends on the scale. I want an auto system so I don't have to worry about how the equipment 'trickles down' through my 10,000 man army.
