The solution [for Oz, re Apple] would be for us to have some piddly little local Computer/OS manufacturer petition our Govt. [like Harley Davidson did against imported bikes] and impose a protectionist levy specific to Apple on imports...that way taxing them BEFORE sales. ...and get them coming...as we don't seem to be able to get them going.....
Quoting Frogboy, reply 58The way it works is Thank you for the explanation, Brad, it was rather enlightening indeed. However, it has little to do with what Apple is doing here in Australia, in that QE is not applicable here, so it avoids taxes by hiding revenue, income, profit, whatever you want to call it, in an offshore account outside the government's jurisdiction. Once there it is nigh impossible for the
Thanks for that, Brad. Is there any real 'value' in those unrealized gains, then, since it's all coming from printed/devalued dollars? Or is it just in the difference between the interest rate and inflation? Absent QE, the relationship between corporate taxes and prices should still apply. But then, we're not absent QE.
Sure because those unrealized gains are tied to stocks and the v

I want to chime in here because from reading this discussion it seems apparent that most people aren't aware of how deliberately the tax system is setup to be gamed like this. The Double Irish The tactic used by Apple (and Google and countless others) is called the Double Irish. Our own accountants recommended we do this for Stardock and Impulse a few years back but I rejected it on principle. The way it works is as follows: Yo
I've thought of a relatively "cheap" but interesting way to have meaningful siege units. Specifically, units that do 2X damage when attacking a city. It would be easy to do and result in a new line of thinking of units (units that are useful in different circumstances).
Gods can die.
I'm pretty excited about this game. I worked with those guys a bit during the Impulse days, they're terrific.
Of course. Is there any reason to believe that we wouldn't be welcoming?
NO Assimilations!
There's a Steam sale this weekend for Fallen Enchantress (and now Legendary Heroes) which is bringing many thousands of new players into our community. Please welcome them!

I liked building my Sovereign into a powerful combat sorcerer and use them to spearhead my attacks. Heroes usually become city governors for me apart from one or two who either lead a secondary force or join my sovereign in questing. How about this as an option: Give the player the ability to have the sovereign leave his tower, but at t
One of my pet peeves of the fantasy 4X games that exist today (including Fallen Enchantress) is that for magic to be fun, it should be a game debalancer. Thus, if we change the rules so that your opponents each have their own goals for victory (that you're trying to stop) that are different from yours then you're free to "exploit" the magic system as much as you can. In other words, magic gets no holds barred. I look at LH and think how nice it would have been if
A version 2.0 has been approved with its own set of features. It'll be a free update later this year.
No problem. Sorry if I came across as cranky. I was writing from the plane from a very lengthy trip. :)
Thanks! Welcome to the community!
Well, in the next Elemental game, the player will start out with the Forge of the Overlord.
I didn't know GOG made games. I thought they were in the business of selling other people's games.
I have Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 at home. I have no preference between the two other than Windows 7 can be customized more with WindowBlinds which matters a bit for me. There isn't anything in Windows 8 that compels me to upgrade from Windows 7 though.
First question that pops up in my head is WHY haven't any big developer done this yet?? Only other 64bit/multicore, Dx 11 engine I know of is Frostbite but I don't know its capabilities. I wonder if it works for strategygames since the new C&C was a failure.
So Brad, if I can get a little nosy here, how does the regular Oxide code implementation compare with the Mantle integrated Oxide implementation? Is Oxide already taking advantage of most of the low level API stuff, or does Mantle improve on it significantly? I've seen the hype around Mantle in the last couple of months, i.e. the press releases, preliminary benchmarks, performance incrase claims, etc.. Wi
I don't know if the books will ever get written. If I did write them, I'd only do it as part of my own publishing endeavor. Random House was a terrific partner and a great publisher and they meant well. But their help on Destiny's Embers changed a lot of how I wanted to write it. I think you are more likely to see those books manifest as games at some point. I'd really like to get the Faedra and the Frozen Realm in now that we have the art resources to do t
It would also be handy if you have a good knowledge of Star Control. :)
