No, I think a +1 is too much, but some stats could be affected.

Maybe something like...

HP: 1-2 x level (apart the traits)

Attack: 0.5 x level

Defense: 0.3 x level

and so...

A cave bear with 0 defense sounds not realistic...what about their thick skin and rough hair?

heh, checking different parts of tha game to see 'what happens if I do this' - and your question only strengthen's my point, people right now won't consider raising a 'cave bear' up to lvl 30, but if they get better lvling bonuses then this might be a more common happening

a lvl 30 cave bear would have 45 attack, 30 defence, 30 dodge( or whatever), etc.- this only brings it from an early game creature to a mid-game creature, though I do see a lvl 100 creature being possibly too tough (but shouldn't they be?)

Increasing that cave bears level increases his Hit Points, Accuracy and Spell Resistance (and spell power, but the Cave Bear doesn't use it).  That accuracy boost in particular is dangerous as it makes their Maul ability that much more effective.

It doesn't effect their attack or defense.  I want the primary indicator of a creatures power to be the creature themselves, when you see a cave bear you should have certain expectations.  The level isn't as easy to see so I don't want to create situations where a cave bear is more powerful than a dragon just because of its level.  Id rather ti was a really tough cave bear, but never be in the range of a slag, umberdroth, etc.

I think this would be best, even if Derek doesn't. While cavebears shouldn't go munch on dragons, it is kind of sad to see high-levelled monsters (hell most all monsters) go useless lategame, since armour scales way high, and damage have to follow up. And adding more HP doesn't really give a lot of chance to survive against attacks compared to adding defense.

That said, the level-up stats should be tailored to each unit.

I'm just thinkin that if a magically inclined Sov specializing in the 'beast master' ability wants to take a liking to one of his pets, it would be nice if he could turn it into his own "Jaberwookie"

Think of how much spice it would at to the game if one could obtain an ogre or troll or bear or wolf or any creature in tha game and 'infuse it with his magic' or simply 'feed it steroids/mites' until it was really something to be feared.  I remember a movie where 'they' had a lion in armour that went around terrorizing the towns people - cool.
