I tried the new beta patch with the Altar and pacing was very good. After that i tested it with Tarth and it was considerably slower. As a consequence the game at all was much more difficult, because it takes time until you have units to defend your city. Or you have units, but you have probs. to start the economy.
I wouldnt say is less fun, but its definitely more difficult with out the starting ressources.
