You lost me... How does that gimp casting sovereigns?
If your a casting sovereign you'll have a higher Wisdom anyway to get better spells. Now you can raise one stat and effectively raise three.
+ Wis = + Ess = + Mana
I just don't get where all the casting sovereign hate is coming from.
So they can't spam world ending nukes... I don't think that makes them a gimped play style, quite the contrary.
I think that if Essence WERE dislinked from mana as many have wanted, it would encourage burning all of your essence rather then making essence use a strategic and measured risk.
As for warriors they'll have to sacrifice points to boost Wisdom if they want alot of Essence to blow. If they don't care they'll be limited at best. If they just drop wisdom thinking that magic is useless they'll be defenseless against city weakening debuffs and the like, which will ultimately cripple their army and hence their playstyle.
If you could elaborate on WHY you think this is a problem rather then simply stating it as such, perhaps I could see where your coming from... Currently though I don't understand all the doom saying going on about essence as it is. Even if you don't use Essence burning spells I'm sure that you'll have access to plenty of powerful spells that just use mana.
Choices shouldn't be no brainers and with the current system they arn't.
If warriors are careless with essence they'll have too little mana to defend their cities and empire from debilitating strategic spells. If Sorcerers are careless with their essence they'll have less raw battle power. Warriors can already effectively use essence to boost their strength by casting self-enchantments using mana which is derived from essence. If they blow all their essence on other things they'll have less power for such useful enchantments. If Mages use essence they're ability to use higher mana spells may be crippled.
This is how it SHOULD be. You shouldn't be using essence recklessly just because its there to spend. It's like a financial security fund... It's something to be used in Emergencies or invested wisely with long-term goals in mind and it supports several play styles.
I've tried to understand where people are coming from with their essence hate, so far all of their arguments seem very one-dimensional and flawed to me.
For example... Warriors can burn all their essence on supporting abilities. Its true, that's one potential play style. It has risks however, spending essence means less defense against magic, less enchanting and no nuke in the barrel when the shit hits the fan. Sorcerers may INVEST a little essence in some intelligent champions to grow a crop of useful spellcasters and yes he'll have to sacrifice some of his own power to do so, but its a choice HE makes. The same sorcerer could just as easily hoard his essence so that in battle he can level fools with tons of mana at his disposal. It's all about choice and consequence and quite frankly the detachment of the mana cap only aids in corrupting the sense of risk and reward surrounding the use of Essence.
In short... It's idiotic.
