Okay so this is a little wierd.. but apparently if you start (or load) a game and then press esc to go to the main menu, and select multiplayer, then instead of joining, choose cancel, you get the message that your sovereign has been wounded and selecting any other option in the menu causes the game to crash. This is repeatable.
