but I've yet to see Impulse do anything like host or connect players outside of maybe SD's own games maybe.
Logic since that kind of functionnality is in Impulse::reactor, which won't be available to other developpers until late summer. And Stardock's Elemental will be the first game to use Impulse::reactor feature.
I'll not revisit the whole list and how I think one change was remarkably ill-conceived and time and testing has only confirmed that for me.
Why not explain us the results of your testing?
Now, players have a realistic choice between city build up right away versus going out and trying to find some good allies right away. Both strategies have risks but now they’re both viable strategies.
Does this mean that you no longer need to have NPC in your influence area in order to recruit them?
Wish SD would get their shit together with impulse and make it more competitive in the few features it lags in so devs could use it and we could have some real competition.
Is its already the case. See http://frogboy.impulsedriven.net/article/378128/GDC_2010_-_ImpulseReactor_is_revolutionary The Impulse::reactor is a direct concurrent of Steamworks. Sa
Because I do not have internet at home (I’m posting via my work computer—it’s also how I patch my games) I really wish Stardock would offer a Per-Order with a DVD option.
I fear you won't be able to patch Elemental since it will require Impulse to install patches and you can't install Impulse on an always off line computer.

Well, I am able to play beta 1 with a 5 year old computer (directX 90B graphic card with XP). But I have turned off all available graphic options.
Playing an installed steam-game does NOT require an internet connection, since steam has an offline-mode.
Well, the offline-mode isn't the default mode for SP game. And I may be wrong but I was under the impression that you need to be connected to switch to the offline mode.
It's not a very user-friendly system to me.
I am not so sure. Having a way to quickly see what units have movement left or what cities have empty building queue without requiring to go to another screen seems more user friendly for me than popup or forcing to go to a city screen.
By the way, gaining experience for your units is a game mechanism which is fun. A pity if its now scrapped from half of the game just because the evil side doesn't like progression in the famous "lore" section.
As Brad said in another thread: Since you can build legions (1000 men), you should look at your units drawn from cities as cannon folder. Especially when you will need to fight a dragon with high level of casualties expected. So it make sense to have only experie

Have you taken a look at the empire tree on the left? Units without movement points are dark while those with remaining are bright. Same thing for cities where bright ones are those with empty build queue. And the icons on the right inform you that something has been build, happened.
Are people here really that ignorant about Steam. You can just go into your game folder and launch it via the startup .exe and never have to even start Steam.
Does this work like that for games that are using STEAMWORKS? Can STEAMWORKS work without any STEAM client launched by any means (even by a startup.exe)?

I was doing the "strange noise quest". I enter the cave with the eben she wolf and decide to attack. The dislayed stats were: me: ATK 9, DEF 3, Battle rating 30 . I have a HP of 34 and a CS of 2.4 the eben she wolf: ATK 9, DEF 4, battle rating of 20. I have lost 3 fights against 4. The 4th allowed me to finally know that the Eben she wolf HP was 46. but I have lost 30 HP in this fight that had lasted 6 turn Not knowing how many HP has the opponent is really ann
My opinion on steamworks drm:
Well, the news about CIV5 using Steamworks wasn't on DRM but on features for Multiplayer, meaning that Firaxis could use a strong SDK for multiplayer. If Steamworks didn't require installing the steam client, I don't think that Brad would have developped Impulse::reactor.
Stardock should accept retail or digital CD keys without any region restriction. If they can make new contracks with the publishers they can survive,if not Stardock's Impulse will dissapear within 3 years.
Well, Stardock is already offering this deal to publishers with Impulse. But none had accepted it.

726 Replies 1,763,283 Views
Until the publishers/developers actually release games that function properly out of the box, requiring Impulse to update the game is just as invasive as Steam.
Well, if that article can be trusted http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Games/Interviews/stardock_reactor/ it seems that Impulse reactor based games will not require the installation of Impulse to update themselves. In fact, they
It's been confirmed on Civ5's twitter feed that Steam is not required to be online to play Civ5.
That doesn't mean you can play Civ5 WITHOUT having the Steam client running ;)
But they can choose not to sell it, because it leads buyers to a service that is currently better than Impulse for a lot of people.
And a plateform very profitable for Steam, as hinted by Frogboy:
. We already have people trying to pressure us to sell our titles on Steam (even though Steam takes about a third of the revenue on any title sold on it).

Steamworks is not Steam. Steam is not Steamworks. Steamworks' best equivalent is Windows Live. The reason you don't see Steamworks on Impulse is because they choose not to support it (yet support Ubisoft's DRM).
Not quite. Brad (the CEO of Stardock) has stated numerous time that the problem with Steamworks is that it requires in order to play the game to launch the Steam client with access to the Steam store. That is why Stardock is creating the Impulse reactor&
know, I'm crazy for thinking that buying games at 75% discount is an awesome thing.
The only problem is that crazy Steam weekend deals have started only after Impulse started their weekend buy deals. So you really need some competition for customer interests.
