I like FFH a lot, but it has the same disadvantage as normal Civ4 - the "stack of doom". That's why I'm waiting for Civ5 and a possible fantasy mod for it, as well as the standalone FFH and Elemental. So far, AoWSM is the best.

"Thrilling tactical combat"? You must be joking... [e digicons];)[/e]
I have similar doubts as the OP's author. Elemental seems to be "founded" on GalCiv2 more than on the great fantasy TBS games of the past. Listening to fans is good, but if the dev team doesn't have strong beliefs in which direction the game should go, the result can be chaotic and "shapeless". I'm sure that there will be some good mods out there, but the unmodded game seems to be rather "bland" from what I've seen so far.
I kind of wonder... if the game is intelligent about positioning units on its own, in what situation would you use a deployment feature if you can't see the enemy deployment?
When I want to use a specific tactics. I think the default unit positioning should be the same as used in the deployment phase of the previous battle (if the army composition was the same).
Griffins, Beholders, Hydras, Unicorns, Centaurs etc. I'm not making a mod at the moment, but if I do, I'll need all these units...
I think there should be more racial diversity in the game. Especially the Kingdoms should have more races than just Humans (they don't have to be in the campaign, but the sandbox mode can have more races). I like the standard fantasy races, but some non-standard ones are good too (like Qunari in Dragon Age and the Fallen races in Elemental).

I love the music in AoW1. In AoW2 and SM it's much like any other fantasy game.

This time I agree with you, Fantasy Wars and Elven Legacy are great games, and a true spiritual successor to Fantasy General. And I don't think that unmodded Elemental will be a spiritual successor to MoM, there are too many differences.
Have you ever played the Might and Magic series? I can't see many similarities to Elemental in these RPGs. But I think you mean Heores of Might and Magic, which is not very similar either, unless you call every fantasy TBS game a HoMM clone...
XML can be considered a programming language, but it's a "different kind" of it, which is used to define a data structure, while languages like C++ or Python are used to define a set of instructions to be executed.
Elemental was called a remake of MoM several times, and has a lot of the good features from that game, from what I see in the beta, but no.. it's not exactly like it. (But who knows, they have hinted at massive changes from Beta to the release version) I am not counting the STARDOCK eggs until they hatch in glorious limited edition that should be delivered to my front door.
I can't see many similarities between MoM and Elemental,
I think making Dwarves is more complicated than just resizing the models. They should have different body proportions than humans.
And MoM, of course. Elemental is not a remake of MoM, but I guess something like it can be done as a mod.
M.U.L.E. [e digicons][/e]
Hmm, I think the quote background should be a bit darker...
It's OK for me now.
