I don't really like any of these ideas. A lot of what you consider micromanagement I'd say ties into strategic decision making. For ex, automating outpost upgrades takes away potential decisions on, do I upgrade the outpost tied to this city (or the bunch of them) or do I train a unit, or do I build a building. The whole upgrade system reduced the number of buildings available. Defending your territory is

I had no problems pasting my serial from the stardock page to the game when I installed it. There are indicators for idle cities (the Zzzz I'm sleeping next to their icon on the tree on the left, which appears on the same turn a queue is idel). I'm newly returning and simply not in the habit of watching for that kind of thing, so I could use a more blatant queue has become empty notification too, like having the right hand side building complete notifier in a different c

I've seen the upgrades for shards in the city menu before, dunno about for other structures. Notification might be good. Auto upgrading wouldn't be good since the closest city does the building/upgrading and you kind of wanna control when that occurs.

The do it or lose it quest thing is kind of a bummer, but it somewhat makes sense. You can see the relative difficulty marker so you can leave it alone. Makes sense that if you decline the quest, the giver looks elsewhere (aka disappears). It's not like they'd be saying, help, save my wife...oh, can't do it now...well why don't you come back in a few seasons and save her then, it's really not THAT much of a crisis, really, take your time.

I'm into logic and common sense. It stands to reason that pumping a natural environment full of unnatural junk will ultimately harm it. Pump your body full of chemicals and garbage and eventually it'll catch up to you. You could be dead or look like Keith Richards. Pump the planet full of chemicals and garbage and eventually it won't be able to take it anymore. Imagine the earth as keith richards.&nbs

Eh, I had the opposite happen. AI took a city and before I could recapture they razed it. Couldn't rebuild due to lack of grain there. Would've had to "reclaim" that area as an outpost. It's a bit odd to me but I guess it must be that way to prevent some kind of abuse I would never be doing.

I loved FFH. I like Civ 5 more than Civ 4 and liked Civ 4 more than civ 3. Some people refused to play civ 4 and still play civ 3. Civ is a different kind of series - it shifts with every iteration and still keeps going strong (despite what people who don't like Civ 5 spew). This game is doing some interesting things and feels way better than it did in its original form. Diversity and variety between game franchises is a good thing, otherwise what'd be th
I used to have more time to blog. Then I had kids.
Eh, one of the things that makes Stardock rock is how accessible you are (interacting with players/fans), how much you write (about your games and the industry in general), on top of your honesty and passion. It's an amazing thing. Unique possibly. I've given up on hating Steam. They win. I have too many games from it

I want to vote excellent but just did good because until I figure out why the AIs are utterly destroying me for score and in general (with eventual war and game over) I'm not sure it really is excellent! If the AIs don't cheat, don't get a resource advantage on normal, and don't have full algorithms engaged...something does not compute. Do the AIs freely trade all resources between each other every turn to get some kind of monster

I'm thinking my loss has more to do with my lack of experience with the game than anything else but I'm happy to see that the AI is capable enough to build an advantage and use it. I wish for...consistent and standard ESC key behavior. I wished for the same thing in GC2 and WOM. It's partially happening in FE, but not across the board. The ESC key should close open windows. If no windows are open, it should pop up the game menu. There are some windows in FE that don't require input that pop up and you can't ESC out of them OR if you hit ESC the game menu appears on top of the unclosable window.

I've played Warlock (but not for a few weeks now, IMO it's fun, worth playing, but it's got its issues). 1. Capital protection - agree - I like it to be difficult to take out cities and for them to have some natural defenses, or as seen in Civ 5 or Warlock, they have hit points so they can't just be rolled by a tiny force or single unit - it gives you time to respond rather than having a city instantly flip or fall and it makes city siege an event

Thanks for the updated and LONG 2nd video. I guess I don't feel so bad that the AI utterly thrashed me in every conceivable way in my 2nd game last night. I got overrun so early. The AIs out expand, out produce, somehow have units coming out of every direction...on normal. I'm sure I must be doing something(s) very wrong. I've waited a while before checking FE out and finally took the plunge. I'm barely getting started but I

Godplex, I find your comments on Windows 8 interesting since it seems to be a complete contradiction to everything I've read about it from users and developers. I guess it depends what kind of developer you are. And I guess it depends on what you read. I develop with MS languages (pc dev, not app/app phone/tablet dev) and I'm fairly pro MS but there doesn't really seem to be a whole lot to Win 8 to make a person want to move from Win 7. Bit late with

Loved XP, great OS, lasted ages, but now is the time for Win 7 64bit, and it's even more rock solid. Home premium is $100 OEM from NewEgg $140 for pro if you must. It's silly to make up weak excuses for not upgrading. Financial hardship is the only excuse and if you're on high speed internet and have time to putz around on gaming forums, I question the hardship angle and have to wonder about your priorities. Mine are having a solid gaming rig a

Why do people think there is only Steam? I hate how Steam works. I much prefer how Impulse used to work (or stardock central before that) with buy, download, unlock - go. Most other digitial distributors work the same way, like direct2drive or amazon's digital. No clue if GS is doing the same now. Other outlets do sales and deals too. I was kind of bummed when Stardock got rid of Impulse. That was my prefered way to get games. It to

It would be nice if games would catch up to the technology of years ago, like 64bit, Dx10, Dx11...but unfortunately a large number of people are still in the 32 bit world. I think the last chart I looked at showed 40% or more of people still use XP.

No. I have zero interest in multiplayer for this type of game. It's odd since I grew up playing competitive board games - but I have never enjoyed competitive computer games as much as single player. I also get sick of seeing the availability of MP as justification for weak AI in single player games (not something that's a problem with SD games). The only computer games I play online are co-op,

I buy all of my games and software digitally when possible and I can't even remember the last time it wasn't possible. I don't like Steam. I use it because there is no choice sometimes. I was sad when Stardock ditched Impulse because I used to always say I would rather buy from Impulse, Direct2Drive, or any digital source over Steam. (D2D has changed hands too). Sad because Stardock has always had a g

Oblivion had one of the worst character development systems I've ever seen in an RPG. Oblivion feels/plays like a MMORPG - except there's no other people and just NPCs that are dumber than WoW players - which shouldn't be possible. Pretty graphics aren't enough to make a game worth buying. I didn't care for Oblivion - although if one really needs to get to sleep it's great at inducing boredom and a comatose state. Fallout3 is a decent game but it's not really F
Anyone got a good reason?
Quality strategy gaming involves decisions and choices. There should be factors that cause those decisions and choices to have weight and substance. City spam and empire sprawl should be a strategic element. There should be thought involved and "costs" tied to the benefits. That is, you get more production, more research, another spot to build units, a blocker, or a resource or whatever when you build a city. You
