I'm sorry but i totally disagree... I've been into tabletop gaming since 1992 and the best turnation systems are, IMHO, the open ones. Many of the things you present as problems with an OI are just balance issues, within the existing system. I have no time to express my point better than this ATM but I'll return if the thread goes on...

Welcome Kael! I've been a long time FFH fan from the very beginning (the beginning of FFH 1!). I hope you'll be able to work your magic and live up to the expectations we have, that won't be easy (expectations are quite high ATM...), but I'm positive you'll manage to bring us something good. You already earned a lot of respect in my book, both for the great game that FFH is and the way you managed the project and the community on Civfanatics. Best wishes from old Italy, <p
You can use caravans to ferry items from a city to the other. I know, that doesnt adress the issue, but I found some limited uses for it...
Wow. This surely deserves a karma point... Nice collection of ideas, keep up the good work! I hope someone at SD is reading all those info!
Yeah, I apologize if I come off as rude. I guess I just take negative criticism of Elemental a little too personally. Maybe I need a break from the forums for a few days.
Apology accepted (for the rudeness of your first post, all the rest are your opinion, and it is not something you should apologize for...)! I speak only for myself, obviously...
That's not the point though. The point is, is that he used somebody's work to make himself look good. Not just Guild Wars, but Civ 4 .
Errr.... you know that Kael was HIRED by firaxis to do a scenario for BtS? Since they recognized that the guy made them gain money I wouldn't say he "stole" from them. Also,
They give a food bonus to the city where they are sent. So just pile them toward the highest food production city you have. They give no gold bonus. Also you can use them to ferry items from one place to another (Woot! [e digicons]>_>[/e] )
Hexs are better than squares for tactical combat at least, but getting poked in the eye is better than what passes for tactical combat thus far in Elemental.
So sad. So true.
Ok, then I'll back off and wait what you'll be able to produce as soon as you start modding Elemental. Please, give us a nice FPS out of it, I know you'll be able to address all the shortcomings of the Engine! People compare FFH to commercial games because it is FUN and free, while many games are paid for and sucks. But thinking that a team of a dozen of so modders should give you the level of polish of a commercial game is just... well strange. Also you didn't answer my question. If

Not sure you understand what today's AI is capable of (or not cabale of) if you think AI can understand a matrix. If you mean a square matrix is a simpler construct/logic to program into the AI than a Hex matrix then you are only on the right track. However if you think of a Hex matrix as a matrix itself

On both points :)
I've played it quite a bit actually. It felt exactly like Civ 4 with some new factions and some lame random events.
Yes. And thousand of peoples playing it over commercial games are idiots. You never played FFh2, did you? FFh2's gameplay aside, it *was* ameteurish. They ripped off art assets from a bunch of games and used them instead of making their own. There's nowhere that can pass for a "professional" mod. Ten minutes of staring at Guild Wars icons in FFH2 made me set it aside and not play it (I'm a big GW fan).[/quot
Dear Kael: please stay away from Elemental. We don't want your crappy game design over here. Have "Caravan" as a special equipment. Then you could design the unit, wich would act as an escort. The hardest part is that the caravan equipment shouldn't scale it's cost with the size of the unit....
Sign me up for this. The game needs a paper-doll screen that is accessible 1. when equipping items and 2. when purchasing items (so you know what you are currently using). One thousand times this. I played Civ IV since release and I NEVER EVER lost a single mechanized unit to melee... The worst I had was a badly wounded tank being destroyed by grenadiers... So, before bashing a game (civ 4) for th
Usually in a 4X game, you should avoid "obvious" choices. If something is such incredibly useful that you end up reaching for it in EVERY game, you have no choice, it is a "must". And that's bad. What I would like to see are more options to increase unit movement.
Can't say anything to that. I too have stopped playing Elemental at the moment. Just remember to check back in 6 months, you could have a big surprise...
Thank you. I totally missed that since I only browsed civfanatics for updates to Rife lately. He,'s a great guy, you can really understand this by the way he explains why the project got cancelled. And to answer the OP, I would gladly welcome Kael's presence in Elemental. Either as a modder or as a Dev.
Sad news. Kael is one of the most gifted, intelligent and positive people I've ever met on the internet. A gentleman extraordinaire. Do you know where I could read something about the game getting canceled?
Fhtagn! (link is harmless)

The first one was plainly stupid (kill sovereign, kill faction, now WHERE have I seen that recently... :p). What I was trying to say
I was thinking about special arrows. Either mundane (explosive, armor piercing) or magical.
ah, I see. Yeah, if they implement it, I think it would replace the guaranteed resources near your starting location, rather than adding to it.
That's why I said I'd prefer the initial bonuses being linked to faction :). That way is just as if you had the building, without them being conquerable by a rushing player.
