The strange looking frog is right. The beta is going to have all sorts of issues. Betas always do. Start with the finished product, FE. It's frankly good enough to give you plenty of pleasure. And once you've become familiar with it--whether that's in a few weeks, or in a few days because you have no real life ;) --you can always move to LH's beta.
Just a fair warning. The AI shows absolutely NO MERCY. Even on easy. 9 of 10 times you will be war dec-ed by 2/3rds of the factions before you finish researching your first 2 techs. It may be a good or bad thing depending on how experienced you are with these types of games.
I'd suggest it isn't a matter of whether the AI "shows no mercy." EA is an object lesson for those who assume that companies are entities, and never change. Back in the early 80's they were an excellent development and publishing house that gave some of the best games designers a good, well-paid, reasonably supportive environment in which to create new titles. Murder on the Zinderneuf, M.U.L.E., and Archon all came out in '83, a year after Trip Hawkins started EA up. Hawkins was smart enough at the time to support good people and leave them to do wh

There are some good gameplay videos that might help out in the basics.

My choice, for what little it's worth, would be Herodotus, the so-called "father of history." I'd like to know the extent of his actual travels, how his work was received, where he got the grossly inflated figures for Persian forces (which he would have known would have been logistically impossible at the time), etc.

You can talk to them about anything they'd know. Of course, you can discuss other stuff, too, but they'll probably just look at you as though you were crazy. Whom would you choose to speak with?

Planescape: Torment. Only things that come close are Ultima VII, Morrowind and Betrayal at Krondor, in my opinion.

As someone brought up an RPG with typically turn-based strategic combat in my other thread on turn-based strategy games, I thought I'd make another thread here for that. So you can keep only one RPG, now and in the future. Which one would it be? My own choice? Planescape: Torment. Though Ultima VII and Betrayal at Krondor are both close runner-ups. Well, and probably Morrowind. Over to you.
