I agree with warcraft (pre WoW) being an awesome setting. One of the designers said that in warcraft 2 they had made an effort to make the elves and dwarves feel a little different from the generic wood-elf and dwarf conuterparts found in other fantasy games. That is why they made dwarves a bit savage, presenting it by riding shirtless on griffins. I'm not really sure what was different about the elves, but I think the example given made them sound more like wood elves, I m

nameing convention is 100% up to us as players in this game, since we are required to give our mages or whatever the name they hold. I just wish we'd get confirmation on how exactly that works. If you recall (or have read) its still vague exactly how mages are handled. Maybe they won't even get to pick the same spells as the channeler? They could get their own set of 'unit spells'
Call it bullying, call it flaming, people can call it what they want, but it forces douches to either assimilate or get the hell out.
Well, perhaps I don't spend so much time on forums that I've seen a realy flame war. I remember once I was taking a 'find out your stats in real life' and I was asked the question 'have you participated in a flame war' of course, I said yes because I play with fire all the damn tim

I'm pretty sure it was just zooming in closer, because otherwise it'd have a blue flare of hyper space travel or whatever around it. Really there isn't a difference from a camura's point of view though (a model becoming closer to the screen I mean)

I'm not entirely sure how you can deal with killer stacks without making combat seriously downplayed. Like the point of a killer stack is that... its a stack that kills everything other than another killer stack in combat, and without such a stack then what is combat then? Multi-turn combats (like that go for more than 1 game turn) might do it though. It would require some sort of turn limit be placed on combats to mark when a battle is pushed to the next game
Somehow I don't think collage students would be much help if you're looking for someone to create 3D models
you obviously don't hang out with the right college* students. I'd be doing interns anyway, so it would be late collage ready to be "professionals." Like this: Cor Project. All collage students, many below the age 23 at the time of making it. Looks pretty professional to me.&nb

I imagined it (disclaimer: as seen in some of the journal discussions, there is wildly different interpretations) as the cataclysm sundered the whole universe leaving pretty much nothing but barren wastes for whatever worlds were left. The survivors, namely the channeler and company, starts having to channel energy back into the world(s) so that life can once again survive. The cataclysm wipped out all civilizations as it was known, science technology and everything was lost
Continous turns (perhaps they mean simultanous turns like in Age of Wonders?) are superior to turnbased turns for multiplayer and allows the game to flow better.
I don't think the word 'superior' really applies to preference, though it does minimize time. There are other benifits to the other methods. I like non-continous turns when there are like 2 players, or for single player games in most similar games. However, I'd be interested to see how it is
As far as I know, culling non-visibile triangles is somehting that all the professional 3D game engines do (and have to do well). Throw in all the user-generated custom content, which I can only imagine will be as customizable as the GalCiv2 ships (rotation, scaling, etc.), and I'm pretty sure they can't ignore one half of the art either. From my perspective, I just can't come up with a compelling reason why they'd force the camera to a particular angle. Now, I could see giv

Well, it really depends on how they do it. I've seen some very good models in mods. Maybe I hang around too many people that are aspiring to be developers, so they have access to the right tools. In general I'd assume we are given basic skeletons, so we wouldn't have to deal with animations. And maybe its because I'm something of an artist so my view of it is scewed, but texturing really isn't that hard. It takes a

Yes, I want to be able to rotate/swivel/zoom my camura. In fact, I want to be able to watch it in a 'cinematic view' for replays and record them without much or any hug to be my screen saver. O.o

Reply to Races? in WOM Ideas

no (kinda yes) There will not be any additional races in the base game. However it is being created so that we can add our own custom races and models. I'm sure they thought long and hard about it. MoM had your classic D&D races at the time (the insectoid races have mostly vanished, but the trikrin or whatever they were in D&D used to be fairly standard). They still had not yet been over done then, however, so inclusion of any excuse to have
I can see the addition of an entire elven subrace. High Elves (WoWesque), Wood Elves (LotResque), Dark Elves (Forgotten Realms Drowesque), Dark Elves (Eberron Drowesque), Fel Elves/Blood Elves/Fey'ri (A mix of all at once).
I'm amused how you choose WoW as your model High elves, especially since Warcraft elves are kinda insane (at least since the sunwell was lost. That is also according to the lore of the g

Well, in most modern games (like Civ 4, and I thought Gal Civ 2) they still respect you as military might if you have a stronger economy. You are not ranked high on the military chart, but you shouldn't be unless you have forces ready on the field. Things that apply to military factions, shouldn't apply to a faction that has no men at arms even though they have the ability to make the biggest guns in the galaxy. AI will still respect you if you can obviously over p

Because they have given us no info about it really (besides half-statements given by frogboy indicating that it isn't complete yet), we don't know. I have the same impression as Luckmann, though I can't imagine they would let us fans of MoM, AoW, HoMM style turn based combat down. Its was suggested that it was a hybrid intended to please all audiances. (online turn based is kinda lame after all)

I'm still curious to find out exactly how this whole fertal thing works. It would be very lame from a story telling point of view if lands just died out. I'd like to imagine that once a channeler can bring life back to the world, and then it becomes self sustaining so that even after the channeler dies the life will continue. You wouldn't get anywhere if the channeler had to support the whole world by himself.

*nods to nimbin* he did politely ask us not to badger him about using AOL, and he obviously has heard it before. I don't think having loyalty to one of the was-leading edge companies in the interenet (back in the 90s, AOL made many advances to try to make the net a more people friendly place) is something worth calling another person an idiot. I mean, I'd agree that AOL is something really not worth running any more, but its not like its hurting anybody*
