Once we get tactical combat in a later beta, we'll also be getting spells that can be used in combat (presumably). I'd say that being able to rain fiery death on your enemies will help in combat, yes. :)

1. Something like that, yeah. It's a lot like Civilization, with magic. Or Age of Wonders, or Master of Magic, if you've played those. 2. You get into the beta if you order from Stardock directly (ie: through the Impulse website). It doesn't matter if you order a digital or physical version. 3. I'm not sure if the current cycle is still open or not. If it is, you'd get in immediately. If it's closed, your pre-order would get queued up and you'd get in once beta 2 starts.

My wallet was stolen last week, and I only just got my new card today, so I couldn't change the details (I honestly don't know who to contact, either). Am I going to have to wait until next Beta?
Yeah, what if the LEs run out before we can upgrade?
If they sell out before anybody has a chance to upgrade, it'd make sense for them to authorize more of them. I don't think they're going to take the most fanatical customers and say "hey thanks for ordering early, suckers!"
If a resource isn't right next to the town yet, right now you have to "snake" upgrades to it. What you do is build a building on the side where the resource is. Once that is done, you can build another building to the side of that, and work your way over to the resource. There was a developer suggestion about making this easier, but right now that is how you do it. Welcome to beta. :)
For anybody new to this, you get an email when you place the pre-order. You get another email (today) when it gets processed and charged. Once you get that email, Elemental should show up after an Impulse restart (and with show pre-release games enabled). If it doesn't, you can use the serial number in the email to register it.
You can break down these things into three types of spells: 1. Dispels (or Disjunction in AoW speak) that kill a currently active spell. Typically, the cost and chance of success are based on the power of the spell, the enemy spellcaster, etc. 2. Counters that try to cancel a spell being cast. I've never seen these modelled very well in a TBS game, personally. Mostly because of the turn based nature, if I throw a fireball in combat it's not your turn and you can't do anything
There's two considerations here. 1. RAM - Needed to load the map and all the units on it. Obviously, more is better, but once you have enough, adding more doesn't help you. 64 bit Elemental on Vista/Win7 64 can address basically unlimited amounts of RAM, XP and other 32 bit versions are limited to a bit under 4GB total, with only 2GB for any one application. The problem is that once you can fit everything in RAM, adding more doesn't do anything. To speed up turns, you need...<

But this is beta 1, of 5. At this point, expect bugs. Expect crashes. Do not expect fun. This isn't a Google or MMO style "demo" beta. This is a work in progress. :)
Preorders are "queued" up. If you place one and the beta is closed, the order sits on the pile and waits. When they open the beta, they process all the queued up orders, and you get in. So if you want in the beta, you should just preorder. The next time it opens up, you'll get in then. (Possibly today, if they're still doing them today. If not, when beta 2 comes out.) From your last paragraph it looks like you already ordered, so it should be dealt with today. If not, your bes
What's the process going to be to upgrade the order, when that is available?
Upgrades are incremental in Impulse, so you won't save much by waiting.
Does it takes long time to apply it with impulse once it's finished? Are we talking about less than an hour or more than that?
IIRC Brad usually tests releases before they go out to the rest of us. Maybe that isn't the case with a 1G update, I don't know. But I wouldn't expect it until later today. edit - Boogie beat me to it.

I'd love to see "Spy" as one, but without an esponiage system I'm really not sure what it would do. Noble - Improves traits of your spouse (which will get passed on to your kids)
I'd tend to agree that while some of these presets are neat, they're not really "traits" per se. Something like Alexander the Great is actually a collection of traits. So that is a bit of a different subject, building some presets is interesting but you need the underlying traits first in order to do so.
Example: your attacking unit has movement=1, and is moving along a road (halves movement cost). Your town defending foe has a unit entering with movement=1, and is moving through normal terrain (normal movement cost). Both units start adjacent to town so will reach the tonw this turn. Result -- the attacker gets there first (half movement vs full movement of the incoming defender) and the battle occurs without the incom
Or TRUE simultaneous turns : you give orders, but they aren't processed immediatly. They are only processed when everyone has given their orders (like in dom3)
Then who wins when two orders conflict? If I have a bunch of units about to enter a town and help defend it against a force that's attacking at the same time, the order those things happen is extremely important to the outcome. When we both give those orders and the game ha
For anything more then two players, a traditional one person at a time approach just doesn't work. It takes an eternity to get anything done once your empires start to grow, and 2/3 of that time is spent doing nothing in a 3 player game, or 3/4 in a 4 player game, etc. I like the idea of time limited turns and a time bank, though the numbers need tweaking. 5 seconds is hardly enough time to move more then one unit. Maybe the times should be configured at the start of the game. With si
