Besides I don't understand that why was it necessary to drop the "real" turn based combat system idea. [...or was it always planned as a continous turn based system?]
To be fair, it wasn't dropped. This has been the description of combat from the very beginning.

Resistance scores work better for some things then others. As you mentioned, they don't work well for "X is immune to lightning." But they do work really well for other types of effects, things like magical sleep and mind control. You can "fake" damage types by using attributes on spells and units and resistences, rather then actual damage types. (Like if fireball is tagged "fire", you could give a dragon an ability "immune to things tagged fire", and achieve the same effect we'
So, you want damage types because if not we won't have any other way of customizing units?
I actually want them because its the most straightforward way to handle things like immunities, but it also adds customization options, yes. There's things that simply can't be done with only one damage type, which have been pointed out already. What I don't want is Civ 4 style combat.

Take a look here. We're currently at 1B (the page hasn't been updated to reflect that yet). The next beta period starts when we get down to beta 2. "Not in 2009" is the best estimate I've got right now.
Obviously all examples I said were just examples. But right, I think that spells (except for basic ones – for sake of balance in early game) should be exclusive. This doesn’t mean that they are dumbed down. Such a system can be much more intricate than just sheer “war of numbers” and can really influence a strategy. Should I go with life magic and rely on powerfull heals or bless, or am I more the necromancer style, who
You could have the spells carry within themselves a list of the creatures that are immune to it.
When there are supposed to be customizable units and spells? That would be an interesting adventure of trying to keep up when somebody creates a new creature, adds it to the servers, and it gets downloaded into your game. Nothing except the built in stuff would have immunity to anything since nothing new can be included on

Yeah, you're likely right. It's not supposed to be a common thing. But lets assume it is possible to manufacture magical arrows (one of the early pre beta example paths involved using some crystals that were a resource to make +2 potions which went on a sword to make a +2 magic sword). You could put those on an elite squad, so you do have some normal units capable of doing some other damage type. The secondary effects of other types of damage kind of dropped out of the discussion at s
Are you really so unimaginative that elemental damage types/resistances are the only cool types of unit creation you can come up with?
No, but... Brad has already said we won't have physical damage types. Unless they're imbued, your units aren't casters, so magic is out. Take away other damage types. We now know everything is doing physical damage, and has some armor to defend against it. There's no in
A more subtle variation of this can occur in a system where you have a dozen stats, but one stat in particular is way more useful than anything else, you're better off just dumping everything into that stat. This can happen if, say, my high 'Speed' stat lets me go first, strike an enemy, evade their counterattack, and then move out of range. Meanwhile the player who invested in 'Strength' finds that he does slightly more damage when he hits, but m

Nope, only of magical damage types and resistances and the "logic" behind "fire makes more damage to water" and so on.
No, you've wiped out the whole thing. What are we going to be customizing, exactly? We've got one kind of offense units can do (physical). So we have one kind of defen

Sins is not turn based. I really don't get where that is coming from. Sins is realtime at a slower speed then your typical RTS (but most older RTS games had a speed option anyway, Starcraft on slow is actually a similar pace). If what they mean by "continuous turn based" is "RTS", then we really need some clarification.
I myself like the Sins of a Solar Empire system, it's essentially realtime but slow paced enough th

The tests done with flaming spears and ice elementals showed than the flames would just freeze and the spears would behave as normal weapons. You like them more, great for you, but not having them won't mean that Elemental is a simple game (at least it seems you people aren't saying that anymore). Putting a "Vista mode" into Windows 7 would be like if they had put a "windows 95 mode" into Windows 98. :P Windows 7 could easily be called Windows 6.1 in terms of the actual differences. It's an improved Vista.

No, you'd just put "#elemental" in the tweet somewhere if its about Elemental. People can then search for that, effectively. That's how things like the Iran Election and Windows 7 chat happen .
