This is the Warfare Tech Category from the XML files, arrows for prerequisites and blue triangles for infinite techs. I've rewritten parts of the report, namely to tie the problems I elaborate on more to the goals, to give examples of various alternate systems in Appendix A, and to make the usual plethora of grammar fixes associated with large docs. I'll sleep on it and proofread tomorrow. Hopefully that'll give something for everyone to chew on Wednesday night, right befo

Ah, so say we have 5 wall techs: Wall-0, Wall-1, Wall-2, Wall-3, Wall-4. Then Wall-0 is required for Wall-*, but that's the only prereq?
This is clever! [e digicons]k1[/e] It might be difficult for the player to manage 5 hands at a time of differing sizes, which is the biggest worry I have about this proposal. Also, with such a large set, I think hand size has to be the same for each category, for the player to have a chance of keeping up. Have you considered a unified hand for all the categories? This is going into an updated version of my big writeup</a
Three Moves Ahead had one of Stardock's PR folk on their podcast and talked about how to do PR for strategy games. I'm listening to it now. Link
I'm just trying to figure this out. So civ 5 and Fallout 3, even if I buy them at a store will force me to download and use steam in order to play? And also does Steam get to be the only place to purchase a digital copy if one chooses to not buy a physical copy of the game?
Yes to both questions. They are marketing Steam as a DRM, and steamworks requires a steam install and account. It does not necessarily require in
Actually, in that thread I'm trying to look at the underlying structure of the tech system, rather than the techs themselves. It'd be good for separate threads to actually talk about what goes in Warfare/Civilization etc. Mine is just talking about how techs fit together - this one is talking about what the techs are. That said, I do give brief mention to technology replication and redundant technology thoughts in my analysis (Appendix A).

Kestral, would it be possible to tie that back into the Elemental forum, so that we can access it from folk's icons here?
The .XML is not quite as straightforward as being on every computer, see my issues finding it in this thread . That being said, here are the copies of the XML that are on my computer - just making sure we're all looking at the same-ish thing.
It should be released on Thursday.
Stardock typically releases their builds on Thursdays, as Bill_Door says. It is implied that Beta2 will be released on this coming thursday, but I don't think we have the promise in writing (which makes sense :P).
Hmm, yeah, I'll probably need to expand that section. I've also gotten a request to expand Appendix A with examples. To tide over while I write: Pulses are a way of thinking about techs, by subdividing them into groups. A pulse spans several levels, and the way the system is currently concieved, a player researches (eventually) all techs in the pulse. We can toy around with making it so that not all of a pulse's techs are researched (paths the player chooses to not f
What parts are you finding confusing? I've spent way too much time with it to see the rough spots now... start listing and I'll do my best to see if I can clear things up.

Overdoing analysis in an absurd manner. Not micromanagement mind you, but rather analyzing entire game systems!
This was originally going to be a series of forum posts, but when I started writing, the thing took on a life of its own. It has made a wonderful procrastination tool, though I guess it should see the light of day before Beta2 starts. With that said, this is not a comprehensive analysis, and is mostly focused on the underlying system and the philosophy behind the technology system. There are definitely ideas that I have not addressed, technology replicati
Curious. When I got home today I checked my desktop for those files and found them! (Pretty much where you said they were). But they're not on my laptop... which seems to play the game fine, how curious.

Prefer Fallout 1 in all its broken glory. I think the most interesting part was that there were several classes of finish (complete victory, the master lives but mutant army destroyed, etc.) that you could only really discover if you were talking over with friends and you're like: yeah I killed the army base and it was awesome! Your friend responds: but that's not the end of the game! ... best moment, period. Also, I think there's a general gaming topic group you could mov
Nifty. How do you plan to teach the player not to build on beaches (and thus create useless cities)? I could imagine that being a frustrating experience for a new player.
