The problem is that in theory, everything is composed of the four elements in different proportions (lets forgets about life/death now...). So I would say that a protection from fire would only work against things strongly aligned with that element. Then we could discuss about why someone inmune to fire should get only partial damage from a lighting attack. Doesn't ice, in concrete circumstances, "burn" too? (Well, for the brain the feedback from the nerves is the same)
