@Pheace I did find the search button after you mentioned it - doesn't exactly stand out does it? Still can't find a solution to the issue. Will try phoning 2K support instead as they actually have a contact number so I might be able to sort out the issue in 30 minutes as opposed to dealing with Valve. To be honest I can't be bothered to debate this further with you and your sort - I think their customer service is abysmal, you are clearly willin

@Pheace Firstly Civ 5 is not found under C it's actually found under S. Secondly, they have merged all the Civ games into one forum when actually they should be separate due to different tech issues for each game Thirdly, there are 200 pages within that forum and I'm looking for a specific issue which I'm not even sure has been covered in there - do they seriously expect people to trawl through all that? Fourthly, there is no search function wi
Oh, and to all the fanboys who cite Steam forums as a source of support, have you seen how many threads that forum has running and how unclear and inaccessable it is? Seriously, you people are blinkered
Hey Steam fanboys I'm running into another issue with Steam in that it won't let me run any installed mods for Civ 5 now. The original system was very good but now we have Steam workshop and I can't even get a simple clock utility to run. Of course you can't simply phone them up and sort it out because they have no contact numbers so you're forced to email or forum post them and hope they get back sometime in the following 6 hours. edit: fo
@Seleuceia All good points, Civ 5 is much better with the xpac and alot of it is due to the tweaking throughout the game. I dismissed Tom Chick's review out of hand; he had no appreciation for the original game so he clearly wouldn't appreciate how the xpac makes it richer. He talks about AI weaknesses but there has been a number of updates to the AI since he did his original review of Civ5 and the AI is pretty decent at invasions and defence these days - it's neve
@ Stuie Thanks for the suggestion but I was referring to the diplo option in Civ4 where you could trade maps with the AI - it helped you to uncover the world without having to send a unit to every corner of the map
I've read the earlier posts and the pedantry and semantics over whether piracy is stealing or not and I'm going to stick with saying it is stealing - people have worked hard to make that game and pirates comes along and take copies without paying thus denying manufacturers a reward for thier labour - that's stealing in my book and I don't care what anyone says to the contrary. Anyway on to the game, which is the real reason why I wanted to post - I was always going to
@enoeraew37 Why are you bashing ToA now? That was a great game and it's a massive exaggeration to describe the AI as 'completely broken', thats just daft and you know it. Civ 5 is a great game too, you may not like it but I sure do - if you hate it so much why would you want to pirate it anyway? People say it lacks depth but the game feels sophisticated enough to me and I've been playing civ since the 2nd one - it's a good game now and it will be eve
@Pheace It's a known issue with civ5 about directx10/11 being greyed out if steam has been restricted via compatability mode - see halfway down this forum page: http://forums.2kgames.com/showthread.php?88587-Common-Problems-*PLEASE-Read-Before-Posting * For some reason my version of Windows decided to stick Steam on compatability mode - more info h
Hey Steam fanboys can I ask a quick tech question regarding Steam - I did think about contacting Steam about it but it's probably quicker just to ask you guys - so here's the question: Compatability mode 1) what is it? 2) how do you toggle it on or off? edit: OK I've found out a bit more about this and of course it's a nightmare to fix - apparently Windows 7 will stick Steam straight into compatibility mode now which means I can't run as
@ Lonemessiah I was outlining my experience of Steam TBH I don't care if you think the they are 'ill informed opinions stated as facts' - I clearly indicated it was my point of view based on my experience. If I've experienced these issues then others will have had similar issues too. You say 1,2, & 3 is restating the same point about having to download games via Steam - I kept them separate because they are inconvenient for 3 different reasons. You say that
Master scouts also feels plain boring to me - in fact Tarth seems boring in general compared to the others. The other factions introduce twists and new dynamics to the game - they add something. All Tarth does is shut down an element of the early game, cheesily build next to slags and drakes etc with zero fear of attack, and spam bowmen. But I never see monsters attacking any AI players anyway, I do however see monsters travelling 8/9 squares to attack me and monsters zeroing in to at
Brad, I can appreciate why you would like Steam on your end; they are a reliable distributor that pays up on time in full. But for me as a customer I get really fed up with them. The reasons being: 1) If I buy a disc in a shop I still have to spend hours downloading the whole game via Steam's servers - thats f'd up; don't they store the game on discs anymore? If you have to go through Steam anyway, why bother having discs at all? 2) Downloading games via Steam
I'm not keen on artificial hard limits for outposts that would be so annoying, especially having 'too close' limits. In some cases the only way to collect a resource is through an outpost as the resources are on rough terrain. If the issue is people and AIs building outposts like crazy well then maybe they should have setup costs, say 30 guildar and 5 pop. People talk about it being a defensive building but it is basically just a watchtower and a beacon so it's no
Hi Derek are you still in beta 3 then? Or have you moved on to beta 4? Just wondering because if you are still looking at faction differentiation and balancing traits then I might make a few suggestions of my own edit: what kind of input are you looking for from us at the moment?
I think that master scouts should give the terrain movement bonus plus allow units to take the stealthy trait at no cost (it still fills a trait slot though) - it should provide no protection to buildings, outposts or improvements - its supposed to be a scouting perk; buildings arent scouts
sounds like earthquake to me. I'm glad you have seen the AI use tremor - I personally havent. I did see them cast frozen bones on a city they were planning to attack so that's progress (although I consider this spell way too overpriced for what it does)
The tax rises are massively punishing on production and research so it makes sense to drop tax to zero until you have things like gallows and bless city - I don't think much of the currtent tax system and an looking forward to the changes they will make in beta 4
I think city spam is less of a problem on ravaged/desert maps as there aren't many places to build on in the first place - with dense monsters too it can be a real challenge to get 4 cities up early. It makes the pop caps even harder to deal with but I prefer less cities on the map compared to an urban sprawl. The friendlier maps get on my nerves with loads of settlements. I'm also looking forward to the cities beta as it needs developing
Tarth's master scouts doesnt really help the AI though because the monsters ignore them and their buildings anyway. If a player takes Tarth then all it's really doing is levelling the playing field so that the monsters don't chase the human player either. I think the trog abilities are pretty weak simply because they have to go halfway down the tech tree to access them - it takes ages to access those abilities and on the harder settings you can't afford to wait t
I was trying it out with Verga and the Trogs and it takes ages before he gets juggernauts and special axes. I noticed all the monsters get loads of hps (which limits early expansion) but also the other factions tech up and develop really fast and the warband compositions seem more effective too. Good luck on insane, I guessing it will be very tough
Just emailing to let Stardock know that ridiculous setting is much harder now so I'd like to thank you guys for beefing up the challenge - I havent been able to come close to beating it yet and I also noticed there is another difficulty setting beyond ridiculous now [e digicons]:O[/e] For now I'm going to stick to expert setting as I've had my ass handed to me twice in a row now on ridiculous. Has anyone else noticed an increase in diffi
If you beat another player you are normally much stronger, not just because you have grabbed a bunch of cities and resources but you have also given your units and champs a tonne of xp too so often your army is actually much stronger than when you started the war. This is particularly true if you beat up an enemy sov and then proceed to beat him up again and again while he's immobilised in cities, your troops and heroes can gain lots of levels this way
I've got a few thoughts on this thread: 1) you don't need to rush to grab all the land and can do fine with 1-3 cities for a large stretch of the game - if the AI grabs loads of land its no big deal. I find I build up massive stockpiles of unused resources in everything except dip cap and gold - the main limiting factor to armies is maintenance costs not resource stockpiles 2) Stardock include some good early game buildings which are often a better route to go than pio
The difference between this and GalCiv is that you never had anything on the power level of high godlike sovs plus it is much more complex both strateically and tactically - the AI fails to take advantage of all the options open to it and is consequently at a big disadvantage. One example is how the AI won't use spells like pillar of fire. The AI also fails to develop it's sovs in the way that a human can (although I've noticed improvements here with the latest beta) and it has di
