1) Incremental maintenance (city cost x-1 of a certain resource -usually gold- to maintain). So as you build more cities, you get increasingly harsh maintenance. This forces you to develop less cities to keep maintenance at a manageable level, and you'll only take on new cities if you know you can offset the cost. Basically, the CIV way. This is actually what we had during the betas and it was a nightmare. v1.1 is going to be

3DG, again thanks for the Machete, but did you see the Aztec sword I had asked for?

@Frogboy - looks interesting. What do you mean when you say that buildings have to be occupied... like in GalCiv and over building without having the necessary population?

So, what is being done about all of the things you listed?

I have another brilliant idea. Monsters target Pioneers. They actively seek them out, as well as undefended cities/outposts. Let the retaded A.I. spam cities and watch them get turned to cinder every turn by rampaging monsters.
^ This. As long as caravan "generates" food, any attempt at using food for maintenance purposes will backfire, as people will build more cities just to get the food.
They keep the existing mechanic that is now, but you have a choice. DO you grow your few cities into metropolises, or do you have a bunch of small cities scattered all over the place. No matter what, everything is connected. No additional food costs incured, only thing
Ive been thinking of requiring food to construct an outpost. Thoughts?
YES! No more global food pool. if you want food, you need a road with caravan going to and from the food source. Create a new unit, caravan gaurd that is only attached to caravans for escort. City spam averted.

I do not like city spam. I wish the resources where actually clustered together better. If you have resources out in the wild, you found an outpost. It doesn't contribute food, instead it drains food, and oh yea, no more global food. If you want cities to have food, they need trade routes/caravans, and if those get killed a long the way, your city just took a major hapiness hit. Now you have a mechanism for a siege. Or something like that.
-------------------- Note I didn't mention Dynasties, Campaigns or heaps of different Spells. These are smoke screens that get in the way of the required core changes the game needs first.
You forgot IMHO!!! just in case someone doesn't know what that mean... In My Humble Opinion. Dynasties are very important. Their proper development and application can turn this game into
This game is a RPG, a city SIM and a Wargame. It has the potential to attract people who are oriente toward any of these genres. I'd love formations but it bet certain people would be bored by the concept of doing things that slow down the pace of a game that is already slow. I think this game neep OPTIONS to do all sort of stuff, no single direction is the good one. But yeah, I am a wargamer and since now the combat start

Yup. I think that is why the latest book has been pushed back. He wrote the adaptation and screenplay for the HBO series. Each book will be featured as a season. HBO has the potential for doing this well. Saw some interviews by GRRM and he was very happy and the cast looks amazing.

Played my first 1.09 game last night. So much better, but the city spam is annoying, especially on large maps where I do not want to be near any neighbor, this way I have some time to build up my bities before the wars begin.

THAT IS AWESOME. Thanks for the Machete. A whip perhaps? An Aztec sword, it would look like the Machete you made but imagine razors spread alongest it's edges spaced apart every 6" http://images.buyitsellit.com/1037154.jpg ?

Just played some tonight.. and the economy baffles me. I haven't played in a while and I can't figure out why my economy tanked. Do I just colonize a bunch of planets to prevent my neighbors from grabing them and then do nothing with them to keep my economy from crashing. Ugh.
