Too bad that title didn't work. However, it seems the Russians and Eastern European developers are also where all the quality turn-based gaming is coming from these days. If not for them I'd be stuck playing Halo and Command and Conquer: 4 I guess ;) Still, I'll give Hired Guns a look.

It's decent, but not great. The game is deeper than the graphics suggest, and even at launch it had a huge amount of user-submitted maps, scenarios, etc, which is always a good sign. I think it would really shine in multiplayer, but I prefer to play against friends via LAN, and I've yet to convince anyone to shell out $45 for what is more a $25-30 title. The AI isn't terrible, however, ably defending their towns, but they seem to expand in a linear way, making it easy for human playe

Making history, I played, but it didn't leave an impression. I'm still willing to look into the sequel coming up next month. As for Hearts of Iron: Hearts of Iron 2 was a solid game, definitely a more long-term and slower game where you need to spend a lot of time planning. It's a great game, if you don't mind this. Arsenal of Diplomacy is a remake of Hearts of Iron 2 that just recently came out, and is a better game in all areas where it isn't identical. I'd suggest it even more.

You are using the unofficial patch/mod 1.13? It doesn't reinvent JA 2, but it goes a long way to fix bugs, add content, and I believe it also reintroduces some quests and such that were in the code, but were never actually implemented. Add to that the ability to create 6 IMP characters instead of 1, and you get a much more fulfilling play. Google "The Bear's Pit JA Community" and have a look. These guys are keeping the game alive.

Still I will reinstall when I get a new laptop that can run the game better, and try again
It's not that it is difficult, I think, as I've only failed a few times, but instead that it seems almost impossible to do it perfectly. I really like the gold/silver/bronze system and the rewards, but like you found, getting tha
Hey Louist, can you elaborate on Armored Princess? The game looks interesting but it seems that it is strictly a single player campaign and that the player is always forced to use the Princess as their hero. Is there no custom games or skirmishes or multiplayer? edit: on a side note from the videos of Heroes of Might and Magic 5 that I've seen, the game looks pretty promising but I don't really

I like it. Simplified, certainly, and the dialogue between maps is juvenile, but I appreciate the broad modding options, and the later levels have me sweating. It's clearlynot for everyone, though.

I can't help you, I'm afraid, because my best advice is: Don't use D2D. They are far and away your worst possible option for digital purchases. Sorry to here about your issues though. I know some ISPs will limit your bandwidth if you start using a lot, and if you use Telus, their 2Wire modem/router "mistakenly" treat heavy bandwidth traffic as DDoS attacks and restarts.... It's possible you are running into a similar problem, but I really don't know. Good luck!

Fantasy Wars, or the newer version Elven Legacy (And it's.... 3 sequels?) can be had on the cheap and are great games. Have a look at older posts as there was someone asking near the same question earlier in the week.

Ah, sorry, how could I miss that? Silent storms IS a great game, and truly more of a tactical RPG.The ram problem is a pain, but the workaround isn't too terrible, just a pain. I'd suggest trying it out despite that, as it is a gem. In that vein you also have the XCom inspired titles UFO: Aftermath, UFO: Aftershock, and UFO Afterlight. They play pretty much like modern XCom games, with research, manufacturing, and tactical combat with RPG elements. There are differences, such as terri

Tactical RPGs have always been a niche genre, and adding to that the fact that they have been more common, by far, on consoles limits your options. Tactical wargames are a bit better off: Most recently there has been Future Wars, which is a simple but mildly charming PC game in the vein of Advance Wars. No RPG elements, the AI struggles, but I like it. Turn based, square grid. Fairly recent, too, are Fantasy Wars and it's sequel Elven Legacy (and the latter's sequels.) these a

The impulse purchases that I have been the most happy with would have to be a tie. Corncob 3D and Simcity 2000. For those of you who missed Corncob 3D, it was truly strange flight sim that had you piloting bi-planes in a fight against invading aliens. It had solid and smooth moving graphics for 1992 game allowing you to fly in all three dimentions, but was devilishly hard. I don't know if it was sold in stores, I mail-ordered it after trying the shareware.

I had to ask ;) I've avoided jumping on the bandwagon so far, but the more I see of the game, the more it looks like it will be a solid sequel. (Not that Blizzard does anything else :P )

As I understand it takes some retooling before a retail version patch (what the devs crank out) is ready for digital distribution. At the very least, SD has to make sure that the patch is compatible with their DRM. As is sounds like the patch was released just before a long week-end, I think it is unfair to count those first few days :) Give it a few days. Last I checked, Steam had stopped updated SE:V..... :P (Or at the very least have stopped announcing when they patch it via update notes.)

Ah, drilling into the keyboard would be beyond my particular brand of courage. As for taking computers into shops, you will generally get charged out the behind for minimal work. And expect to pay even more if they come to you. I'm glad, for once, that I paid for extended warranty. I hear the local geek-squad or similar ask $90 an hour for in-home work.
The Australian OFLC bans - not censors - video games. Big, big difference.
I admit I am confused by this statement, as to ban a work is to carry out the censorship of that work. It is not the only form of censorship, and I have no idea how to find out how common a form it is relative to the other forms of censorship, but it is without a doubt a form of censorship. They are not one in the same, but one is

You're undoubtably right, but It took me a little bit to clue in, after which I tried a few things to fix it myself, including a bios update and speedfan. Add to that the fact that I really do not enjoy dealing with customer support, whether it's Dell or any other institution, that has its employees reading off a computerized script. It's often less than helpful and mildly condescending.

Twice, after the computer got so hot it shut itself down, the three fans ran full-blow when I restarted it. But during each re-start, the CPU and RAM ran at 100%, causing startup to take almost 20 minutes, and forcing me to shut it back down. The third time is when I updated the BIOS, the fans ran for 3 or 4 seconds w

It's hard to match the charm of AoW, I think. Something about hearing those little goblin yelps, or the orc grunts, or sprite... tiddles? Elemental is shaping up to have its very own charm, though :)

Just a quick response from me here: A Civ 4 mod had a fun little option in it that cuased the game to play out like this: At some defined point (number of turns) the game would start checking scores, and if the player was leading the next highest civ by 30% or more, the player would switch control to the lowest ranked civ, and his former civ would go to the AI. The game would now wait for the player to take this new race up to the top of the ladder. When he does, he aga

Thanks for the preview! I'm also excited for Civ 5. I like the tactical-influencing changes to maps and units, and giving resources control more impact. I worry about the removal of religion and esponage, and after Revolution, I have some fears about the series losing some depth.... but time will tell.
