I can train them just fine. Did you hide them by accident?
not sure, how do you hide a unit? if I check under edit -> show hidden design they're not there either :/
I reread your post. You do need to research leatherworking to get defenders. The defenders are designed around their leather armor.
I know that, I have the tech researched but no defenders buildable
edit: k, found the issue, you also need training for the shield.
Did you mod the game any? Because I'm at a loss here.
I had just forgot you also need training tech since they come with a wooden shield
