Attacking a stack on the same tile as a friendly.

So, case in point, I have an enemy army on the same tile as an ally's caravan.  With my army selected depending on where I move the mouse in the tile it shows the caravan or the enemy as the tooltip and the pointer changes accordingly, however, I cannot choose to attack the army.  If I have the two crossed swords and the enemy selected when I click it pulls up the diplomacy for the ally.

Am I missing something easy here?

The game gets confused when you wind up with a unit in the same tile as an enemy or a treasure and it won't let you move another army to get the treasure or attack the enemy.  I get this quite a bit as Beastlord upon Taming a beast in a tactical battle ... if there is not enough room in my army (with my Sov casting Tame), the Tamed beast will stay in its starting tile with no movement points, even if there is another enemy army there.  If there is no enemy army, it won't let me collect the treasure with my Sovereign.

Enemies merge groups if they end up on the same tile, that's how you end up with bears and ignis together. What I would like to know is how to merge two armies on the same tile if there is room for both in one group or heck, even just a army transfer window like in other 4x games.
