I think I can provide you with a savegame where I had the exact same problem. It was a quest of "troublesome adventures" and I recieved an untranslated book of demon summoning. 

But being close to a computer illiterate, how do I find the savegame in question (I have a Steam-copy) and how do I attach to a post here?

I get this problem frequently. I have tried using different resolutions and the atlas map thing (it says it has to do with the ui so I thought I'd try changing it). Usually not a big deal, but it currently is happening on the main quest during the second gate quest where I am supposed to get curgens maul from a bunch of trolls. It just says "Defeat the Trolls" and "Done", but clicking done or pressing ESC does nothing. It doesn't freeze, if I press the windows button it still cycles between cities, but I cannot do anything else really. My game is updated to today (I just downloaded a patch about an hour ago). If theres any information I can provide let me know.
