[CRASH] On application startup before the main menu

Greetings,

i am unable to start the application. I never get to the main menu.

What i see is the loading screen, and after that for a split of a second a bink video seems to appear.

I am using the steam version of the game on a x64 Windows 8 machine (fully updated).
