This beta funding thing.

I think this beta funding thing is great.

1 - We get to play the game all through the games development.

2 - Stardock don't have to rush a release for funds, therefore making the game as good and as bug free as it they possibly can.

3 - We all have a say, how ever small, in the games development.

I bet there are lots of other benefits that I can't think of at the moment.

I think all software developers should do this.  It would make for a better quality of game.

Its not really "beta funding"

Its eccentric CEO funding. Basically Brad is funneling money into making video games, and using his software company to back it up. Most of the people playing the beta probably got a free copy from buying E:Wom anyways.

I think alpha & beta funding are great but its very difficult to get people to play your game, much less pay for it in advance. As an indie developer, I can assure you that its not as simple as putting up a website with paypal info.

End of UmbralAngel's quote
That plus going around to your usual gaming communities and telling people your game exists is enough to get the word out and probably to make some spare change. Of course, you won't make enough to quit your day job, but most people in games don't.

Well, what ever it may be called, I like it.  It makes a gamers life a lot more fun, and removes the waiting around for years for a game, only to find that on release it's not worth a sausage.

Well, to be fair, they're probably not getting too much funding from the Beta; most of the active community here were around with myself when we were Beta Testing WoM.

I suspect most of the funding would arise from the sale of Impulse.  Considering it was becoming a solid competitor to Steam, I'm betting Stardock don't have to worry about funding for their games for a long, long time.
