Minimum resolution exceed netbook resolution

Unless my memory is bad, they said that Elemental was going to support netbook resolution like 1024x576. But when I run the program, they say that the minimum resolution is 1024x768.

Will there be support eventually for netbook resolutions?

Netbooks are not currently officially supported. If you run with cloth map only, and set the resolution to "Custom" in game, then enter the following in 'Prefs.ini':

[Video]
DisplayWidth=1024
DisplayHeight=576

Then you may be able to play. Also, hooking up an external monitor should work.

I tried changing the resolutin in the ini files. I did not find any prefs.ini file but I found the same entries in the default.ini file.

Elemental still keep saying that the minimum resolution is 1024x768 and My netbook does no support the 32 bit mode. I only support 32 bit on my TV. But strangely it still run in 16 bits, but I get 2 large ugly yellow stripe on the screen.

So I guess it's external monitor only.

For Win XP Prefs.ini should be located in the \\My documents\my games\elemental directory

For Vista and Win 7 its in the  \\Users\xxxuserxxx\documents\my games\elemental directory

I tried it, and it does not work. The software really limit the resolution according to the monitor. But if I use the 1024x576 resolution on my TV, it works, but it's very ugly. So I think the software check the monitor capacity and if it can't be lower than 1024x768, it stops.

Is there a virtual desktop option that creates a scrolling desktop effect for Windows? So that Windows can offer the 1024x768 screen size on smaller screens and we can just scroll with the mouse in windowed mode? (Or so Elemental will pass the monitor check and _then_ load with the pref.ini file specifications)

 

I remember Windows 95/98 having scrolling desktops from back when I used RPGMaker 98 and it required a larger desktop than what I had.

I have used a software called "shift window" for playing Civilization IV. The only difference is that I think Civilization IV runs even if you do not have the right resolution. So using shift window to actually see what is missing can work. I have not tried with elemental, but since it prevent the software from running if you do not have the right resolution, shift window might not work.

Windows still has that function, it's just difficult to get at it as under normal circumstances resolutions above your display's capacity won't be shown as options in the desktop settings.

Any chance you guys at Stardock can post a link to show us how to unlock these settings? This would at least be a temporary solution so I could play away from home. I found some things on the registry that were for Windows Vista. I found the same settings in my Windows XP netbook but they didn't have the same effect. I had to restore my registry after some DX errors.

IIRC XP has a toggle in the advanced display settings to filter the options to only ones the display supports.

I forgot all about that checkbox.

 

Either way, I used it and set my resolution higher, which worked for allowing me to bypass the error message regarding resolution. But I still get a black screen with an error box saying "Failure to initialize display" with an okay button before killing the application. In November it won't be an issue because I'll be living with my fiance in a duplex, but for now I travel with my netbook and spend long periods of time between her house and mine.

 

So I may just have to play once every few days.

 

Thanks for your help in getting as far as I did, at least now I have more desktop space. ^^
