So my King take on Lord Relias. Hit him with a spell that looks like it dinged him for 15 points. Hit him with another spell that looks like it hit for another 15. Clicked him to check his stats and it said he had 1 of 15 hit points. Spelled him again for another 15 and he still didn't die (I had action points for 3 spells in my first turn). Next turn he ran toward a cloud bank and the turn after that he fled.
Maybe it wasn't in hostile territory to him, so it was pre-destined that he survive somehow, but why didn't he disappear after the 1st or 2nd spell? Why let me waste mana on spells that won't accomplish anything?
Actually, I think the battle was just outside a town that I had just captured. Is that supposed to count as hostile territory for him??
---
Few turns later I caught him again and autoresolved. Won and gained a level, but he was still next to me so I attacked and won again. I guess it the same kind of repeat-combat but others have reported with different details (?).

Few turns later I caught him again, autoresolved and won, but then he was still standing in the same spot. My Sovie had disappeared from the map. Clicking on her top-left icon indicated that she was still there, and still had movement points, but when I tried to attack again nothing happened, so I next-turned.

When I finally caught him in my territory and killed him, ALL the text descriptions of everything disappeared. Had to guess my way to exiting -- even the "do you really want to quit, a few more turns...." and the "yes"/"no" were just empty boxes. Alll was well when I loaded my save game though (I had control-S-ed after winning, so the bugger was still dead, thank goodness).
