Somehow the view of my game got me so close that half the screen was filled with my sovereign's boot. The middle scroll wheel would not work. I could rotate the camera. Sometimes this would cause the view to be just the tile my sovereign was in with his bear and that filled the screen. Sometimes the view would be under the ground. Trying to load the auto-save did not work until after I exited out and restarted E:WoM.
