I couldn't figure it out for a while, but once I loaded an auto save, I figured it out.  The save was at the point of the crash.  it drops me directly to the desktop.  Anything after the first 2 auto saves it will crash each time there is an auto save, the game lags upon the start of the auto save then I see my desktop.  The game is not running in the background or anything, it is gone.

Update:  So I turned off auto save and it still crashed on about turn 10, no reason, nothing crazy was going on, just trying to get npcs to join the kingdom, very small city, 1 research going.
