[1Z5][GAMEPLAY] what do family members need essence for ?

Since they can't found cities.  I've had some with more essence than the sovereign starts with.  What for?

EH? Was there not an update called 1z4 a few days ago? Also was 1z5 not announced in a journal then? I ask because I can only play once every so often so I can't really keep up unless the journals warn me.

There was an update, but I wouldn't call it 1Z5. The version number is still 0.32 so basically it's 1Z4. We don't know that what was updated at all....

Plus if we were counting every patch this would technically be 1Z6, because there was a minor patch between Z1 and Z2 (or was it Z2 and Z3?) that they released over some weekend.  At least that minor patch was mentioned in the dev journals too.

With respect to the original question, it means they can cast magic.  Which is very useful.  Once you have a few people to cast teleport, you can effectively move armies instantaneously within your realm.  I'm thinking that this could lead to some very interesting strategies when it comes to border conflicts.

Mana is generated by characters individuallly - it's the blue bar around the portrait (if they have essense).  The bottom left count is spell points, for learning new spells.  Arcane laboratories etc (stuff from the magic tech tree) generate these.

I could swear I saw something saying "1Z5" somewhere, maybe in Impulse while it was downloading.  Maybe someone who hasn't updated for a few days can update while watching really closely and let us know.

I think you might be correct.  If you right click on Elemental in Impulse and view history, it shows:

Mana is based on essence, mana will regenerate only if you still have essence, spend all your essence and you're out of luck (until you level up and buy more of it). If you do have essence, keep in mind that mana can take a while to regenerate, sometimes several turns to get back what you spend on a single spell. I think wisdom and intelligence affect mana as well - they give more regeneration or more mana per essence or something like that? - but the bottom line is 0 essence = stuck at 0 mana.
