Alright, so I finally got this game, loved Master of Magic, loved Master of Orion, loved Galactiv Civilizations 2 bla bla bla, you know the drill. I won't bore you with that, so let's get down to business, shall we? Let's see what works and what doesn't here:
Intro: Loved it, although I assume it'sadly s a temporary intro. It took me back to thMS-DOS days with Master of Magic and all that, complete with slowdown. Kids today might hate it, but I loved it. Way to go!
Starting the game: Not much to do here for either of us. There wasn't much I was allowed to do (like increasing map size etc), but that's ok. This is just a beta. What I could do was pretty easy to understand, and I had a custom sovereign in a few minutes even without a manual or anyone telling me what did what. Nice job.
Gameplay: The first letdown. Let's be honest, it looks pretty horrible. I know, you did warn me about no pretty graphics in the intro, but still. Wow... But no matter, this isn't about graphics. This is about gameplay. It was a bit tricky to know what to do at first, but luckly I come from Civilization, Colonization, Alpha Centaury and, probably most important, Master of MAgic. This game felt very familiar right from the start, even though there are things I struggled with, and probably a lot I don't know. After my first playthrough, I could still only use one magic spell (revive land). I don't even know how that spell works, although I did manage to use it.
Quests: Needs work. I talked to a guy and got a quest to save his daughter from bandits, but no one told me where those bandits were. I found them in a tent above the city after a whlie, but that could have been done better. At one point I was going to kill a spider queen, or something like that. Why was it walking around on the map outside its lair? Did it go on vacation?
Custom units: This disappointed me. I was hoping full customization for all units, but all you can do is give them new weapons and armor. You can't even make female soldiers? Is this something that's gonna change? Don't get me wrong, it's not bad. But after hearing we would have as much unit customization as in GalCiv2 since preview 1, it's a but underwhelming, to say the least.
Overal: I pre-ordered the limited edition. 'nuff said.
