Hey, thanks Jafo! I think I have a long way to go toward getting a real handle on LiteStep. IMO, part of what makes it a bit more difficult is that different authors don't "package" or structure their themes the same way. Of course, those with multiple styles make it even harder for someone learning what's going on. I guess the problem is one more of having to tweak a theme to get the components to appear. As a relative LS newbie, I think it would be great to branch off the LiteStep themes into "beginner" and "advanced" sections. In my opinion, "beginner" themes would be those that are relatively complete, with respect to how closely they emulate standard Windows functionality. In other words, as a newbie, it's going to take me awhile to figure out how to add a systray. With themes that already include one, I can learn by seeing what was already done. Why would *anyone* voluntarily choose to use a browser like this? MSN Explorer will save favorites remotely, if you absolutely feel the need to store your personal favorites remotely, but there are browsers like "32 Bit Browser", "Crazy Browser", Smart Explorer, etc, all of which provide actual functionality. Heck, carry your favorites on a floppy, but this thing has SPAM and privacy invasion written all over it.
I have always owned Windows machines, but have liked and installed countless OSX type themes. Oddly enough, I went to CompUSA about a week ago, and played around with a mac for awhile, and thought, "Gee, this is it?". I think the first thing I'd want to do with it is find a way to make it look like XP. I think I got my "fix" when I was there. Now, I pretty much feel it's ho-hum.
I like my trial of Aston 1.6.2 a lot, but for people just starting with it, be aware that changes to Aston themes will make changes to your Explorer shell/desktop components if you switch back to the Explorer shell. Some custom icons, and desktop icon size are among the things I found changed. I believe Aston should reset these when you switch back to Explorer. Other than that though, it's easy to use, and light on resources.

I notice that one of my most frequently used apps just doesn't want to load into the tray (Advanced Direct Remailer). Otherwise though, once I realized Object Bar's trayserver was messing with it, it looks good. I've been at it all night, tweaking .rc files, etc . . I feel like I learned a lot in a hurry, but I think sleep would be a good thing now.

I figured I had to be out of LiteStep to update the files, so at the moment, I'm running Exlorer. I'll copy over the files with the ones in the 5/15 build, and then log-off back on into LiteStep. I chose the 5/15 build because it is identified as the stable release, but I see many recent themes are looking for June and even July indie builds. I guess I'll end up updating it like a maniac (like everything else) eventually, but for now I guess I'll give 5/15 a shot. Thanks again for all the info.

Excellent - thanks. I wasn't even so much concerned that I'd have ShellOn as a shell selector, but I just wanted to make sure I'd have an easy way to manually change shells. At least at this point, I'm bouncing back and forth a lot. As it turned out though, ShellOn is now properly prompting at log-in, so for the moment, I am a happy camper.

Okay, I got ShellOn working! But, I had to do something undocumented. I executed shellon.exe from within LiteStep (after doing all the config.exe stuff), and from the shellon icon, I selected explorer and logged off. When I logged back on ShellOn was there as my shell selector! But - I saw that process nowhere, and just stumbled over it. Now, to see if I can/should just overwrite my LiteStep with the 5/15 stable idie build. Just copy it over, eh? Hmmm.. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/image

Hmm. This is strange, but I have LiteStep working fine with Simplicity, but I can't find a shell swapper that does a thing - still! Interestingly, if I use the shell swapper that comes with Aston or Talisman to get back to Explorer, that works fine, but ShellOn doesn't do anything, nor does this latest ShellEnabler I grabbed. I wonder if it's something to do with my logon screen? I only have two logons (me or "administrator"), but who knows. Also, I see that the systray module in Simplicity onl

YES! LiteStep running! I started over, and just let the installer (2.0.1) set it up as the shell. I also found something called ShellEnabler that I may try if I need a swapper. But - bottom line, it looks good! Now, how to get things like a systray that will show running processes would help, so I guess I am off to do some reading and grabbing more themes. Well, I manged to boot into LiteStep via LiteSpawn, but it took forever to load the LiteStep theme, and it imcomplete, odd looking, etc. I have a feeling LiteStep's more than I'm up to right now, but on the other hand, Talisman looks very cool and easy to work with.
Maybe the elves are working on "Sac-o-Skins"! I think they should work on a new name.
