I've been experimenting a little with creating a unique race where buildings, units and items will only be available for that particular race. So far the prerequisites listed seem to have been limited to Tech and Allegiance. But you can also specify Race. There is still a lot of trial and error, and I'm not sure what the impact is on changing the race to make it unique (in the default game the only races specified are Men and Fallen). Thanks for the update Brad, but with all respect no-one from Stardock has ever commented or addressed what many have been saying since the beta versions that the races are boring and one-dimensional. You have listed the easier XML fixes (magic and research etc) but the whole concept of essentially just having a single model with coloured skin that players can dress up with items just doesn't cut it, sorry. In fantasy games I think players are not looking for traditional real-life race

As Supronar said, Dominions can take a while to get a handle on but it is well worth it. Pick a single race but make sure you read the guide for that race in both the manual and also in the Dominions forum. Your choices in the setup make a massive impact on the game. Also play against only a few other races initially rather than filling the world. If you are wanting to finish games you can turn on the cloth map in the options. Then the game goes quickly again but without the eye-candy.

I think you are right on the money here. It does appear that the cart is driving the horse in that the game has been restricted to fit the Lore. And the Lore has been restricted to fit the book. Another point is the way there are only two 'factions' with five 'races' inside them. Personally I think the terms are arse about in as much I would expect factions to exist within races. Hmmm. This is really getting frustrating! I'm reluctantly going to be putting Elemental aside until this issue is resolved. Just waaaaaaay to painful. Not sure if I'm missing something but I have a bunch of monster units in my army with small amounts of mana but as of 1.06 the spell book is closed and they can't use it. Fire and Stone giants are fine because they have their spells in the status window. But the others can't use it.

If an army has too many units for a tactical battle it ends up piling all the extra units in a single tile right next to the enemy. Seen this in both 1.05 and 1.06. There should be a limit to the number of units allowed in an army.

The pathfinding in the game is still really poor. Units will decide to move along the edge of a forest and restrict movement than move out onto the plains even though the number of actual squares needed to travel won't change. Ideally, if a unit had say a movement of 2, it would move out to a plain on the first move, then look for defensive terrain on the second move.

Agree. Split what's in there between the Adventuring and Civ trees and replace it with a race-specific tree to try and get some differentiation between the factions/races.
