Is the Familiar supposed to always start at level 1? In that case, the description should clearly state so. You do realize it would make it completely useless? Please note the Familiar is not working at all in version 1.5!

I agree with Merlinme: play smart and fast. A plan on how to beat the AI opponents also helps. I usually try to level my Sov as much as possible and try to build a Stack of Doom with speed 5. Other options: getting a dragon, building stacks of buffed-up staff-wielders, rushing your neighbor(s). There are probably more, but that's all I can think of for now. Secondary goals could be: try to get Henchmen and/or Quest maps asap (Altar), get your shards upgraded (Resoln), buil
This has just happened to me as well. I loaded a game - because of another bug! - and I notice my shard total is less: my borders have mysteriously shrunk and I lost a shard.
I support this message.
I had the same thing happen as the OP. A Tarth unit and a wandering mob in the same tile. 1.5 is really, really buggy :(
Derek, as of 1.5 this bug is back. Even worse, Familiars cannot summon anything anymore. Please fix both bugs!
On higher levels, the AI has extra tile yields and bonus growth and production. But don't let that stop you from creating a mod and try and see how it works out. Cheap pioneers might work better than those bonuses, I don't know.
Ah, ok. I thought you meant a female hero, a heroine. Well, since I already infected whole armies with graveseal and blindness several times, I guess I never have to try heroine. That's kind of a relief, actually.
Before 1.5, AIs did not surrender in the first 40 turns after war started. Now they might surrender after 12 seasons.
Great stuff, keep up the good work!

2: 5 population seems too low. I would say 15-20 pop. 3: Why? In my games, I always see AI pioneers everywhere...are you sure they settle less than human players?
Let me ask a new clearer question. Base food per grain is 25, not 20. IMO, food isn't as important as production, except for your first city. If you have access to Sovereign's Call, 2 or 3 Grain does not matter much, but if you are an Empire, 2 Grain in your capital will really slow you down.

I'm afraid there's no guide. It's all personal preference. The posters above already prove as much: I would go for the 2/3/4 in this case, and make it a Conclave. It will soon produce 12 mana, without any shards. But I always use Mage Sovs. I suppose Primal and KVM don't. KVM is right about materials being more important than Grain. However, for your first city, low Grain does hurt, as your Capital needs to produce many Pioneers. That's why a 3/3/3 Concl
Wrong thread, people. Back on topic: I would like to know how many turns it takes for players to level up several decent (lvl 8+) heroes. Are we talking about season 40, 80, 200?
Most champions are underachievers, I agree. Usually I aim for champions with spellbooks my Sov doesn't have, so I can get useful enchantments; mainly Tutelage and Stoneskin. If they need a level to get to Air/Earth 2, I let them join my main stack for 1 or 2 fights and hope they do not die. Also, I always make my 1st champ a Commander and try to get roadbuilding. But usually it takes very long to level that hero to lvl 3/4 (I take Tutelage first, if I can), so my cities are alread

What the others said: avoid the stronger monsters. Sometimes your starting army can gain enough experience to go from weak to medium to strong by fighting opponents in the same order. But if you are not a Beastlord or Summoner, you need some luck with the available monsters to achieve this. It also helps to know which mobs are pushovers and which should be avoided. Somewhere on this forum someone made a list of relatively weak or powerful monsters. I will give my two cents bel
Wow, I didn't know this. it makes the Ophidian even more desirable. Funny, if LH had multiplayer, the Ophidian would've died in an onslaught of nerf-cries within days after release. It makes conquering cities 10x easier. And it is such an easy quest!

I had the same thing happen to me. I used 'set in stone' to help build the Temple of Forgetting. When it was built, I had -2 research in that city...I figured a Study etc. would get it back to -1, but I did not try it. Unfortunately, my game crashed repeatedly soon after and became unplayable :(
The only use I've ever found for a Familiar is to sit in my capital giving me twice as many Freezes/ Withers etc. It can be quite handy if the only hero you currently have with useful strategic spells is your sovereign; you get to cast those spells twice as often, you don't have to worry about the cooldown so much.
Yes, that's the only way I have used it.
