I think we have a bit of a ways to go, but I think at the same time you may be a little unfairly harsh. We still haven't even got a large patch yet. The average player will probably never play on ridiculous.

I personally see the game's "story" as a way to get introduced into the lore. I don't really think a 4x TBS game should have a story.
I personally like how Game of Thrones has done it. The series is about political intrique and war on a human level. It's low fantasy and I appreciate it. I mean there is still some magic and dragons and such but you don't see a hoard of Urk-hai running in to battle. I love Tolkien, but I love it because it was original to Tolkien. 19, US, first SD game was Sins of a Solar Empire (bought it when it was still expensive.). Been playing strategy games since I was probably 12, and I've put probably a couple thousand hours in on various TBS games over the years (starting with Alpha Centauri and Civ 3). I don't want to see fantasy races in FE. I am not sure why people do. It's not in the lore and when you dump in fantasy races you're just dumbing it down to every other game. I'd rather have like an ogre faction or a bandit faction or something that is in the lore.

I started my first challenging game the other night. Challenging/Challenging that is. I am not far enough in to tell where I am at, but it seems like it is going to be a long game.
We all enjoy playing the game for various reasons. We shouldn't be fighting over something silly like the reasons we enjoy the game. We should be working towards making it better for all of us.
The gamespy review made me think that it is someone with little experience in the TBS genre. He said the early game is too hard. Maybe it's jsut because I have played a lot, but I find the early game a challenge but not hard - not even nearing difficult.
